Efraimson breaks HS record in the 1,600

State Meet Highlights

The Washington (WIAA) championships are held in two locations. The largest three classifications (4A/3A/2A) meet at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The smallest (1A/1B/2B) gather at Eastern Washington in Cheney. The high quality in the 3A and 4A meets makes this one of the most news-worthy state meets in the country. And this year did not disappoint, with Alexa Efraimson running the fastest 1,600 meters in prep history.

Top Performances:

- Alexa Efraimson had a decision to make – stick it out with the state meet or accept an invitation to the Prefontaine Classic. She made the right choice by staying put and running 4:33.29 to win the 4A 1,600 to break a national record, and then 2:04.10 in the 800 for a new PR. You never know, it could have been the Camas junior's final appearance at this meet.

- Hannah Cunliffe, senior at Federal Way, waited her whole prep career to get a crack at the state championship meet. In the Puget Sound, newspapers have documented her talent and Olympic aspirations since eighth grade. She had a fine state meet, anchoring Federal Way to an all-time state best 4x100 (46.90) and winning the 4A 100 and 200. She ran wind-aided prelim times of 11.41 and 23.89. She also helped Federal Way to the 4x200 title and overall team title (1:40.06).

- Joe Hardy, senior at Seattle Prep, went out in style with wins in the 3A 1600 (4:07.73) and 3200 (8:55.11) against high quality fields that included NXN champ Kai Wilmot (in the 3200) and Foot Locker runner-up John Dressel (third in both races). Hardy did not run at the state meet as a junior, making the achievements all the sweeter.

- Isaiah Brandt-Sims of Wenatchee, a Stanford-bound senior, put his final stamp on the state meet with convincing wins in the 4A 100 (10.76/10.36w prelims) and 200 (21.38).

- Drew Schreiber of Eisenhower won titles in the 4A 800 (1:51.75) and 1600 (4:07.32).

- Cameron Stanish of Garfield won the 4A 3200 (9:00.10) and was third in the 1600 (4:09.36).

- Eric Simpson from Gov John Rogers swept the 4A hurdles in 14.16w and 37.78.

- Tyson Penn of Federal Way won 4A titles in the high jump (6-9) and triple jump (49-2w).

- Darhian Mills of Inglemoor, a junior, ran 42.45 to win the 4A girls 300 hurdles.

- Ellie Heiden of Kamiakin won the 200-400 double in Class 3A and did it with Washington-leading wind-legal 24.66 and 54.93.

- Megan Beauchene of Kamiakin swept the 1600 (4:48.42) and 3200 (10:34.52).

- Sophomore Chinne Okoronkwo of Mountlake Terrace has become one of the nation's top triple jumpers and she won the state title with 40-11. She also won the long jump with 18-2.50.

- Brooke Feldmeier tripled for Tumwater with wins in the 2A 200 (24.96), 400 (55.83) and 100 hurdles (14.86).

- Kirsten Webber of Squalicum cleared 13 feet to win the Class 2A pole vault, defeating teammate Madi Krussow, who broke the all-time state record (13-3) earlier in the season.

- Budda Baker of Bellevue was the top 3A sprinter, taking the 100 (10.77), 200 (21.87) and helping his team win the 4x100 relay.

- Regyn Gaffney of Adna was the standout of the 2B meet, winning the 100 (12.10), 200 (25.19), 400 (56.40) and long jump (17-9).

- Ray Stark from Elma put an interesting combo together with wins in the 100 meters (10.86) and 300 hurdles (37.90) in Class 1A. He also helped his team take fourth in the 4x400.

- Abi Kim of Seattle Christian won the 100 (12.31), 200 (25.09) and long jump (18-4.75) in the 1A meet.

- Jonathan Green of Ephrata put a very nice sprint triple together, winning 2A 100 in 10.61, taking second in the 200 with 21.60 and third in the 400 (48.10). See below for more details.

- Dejuan Frye of River Ridge won the 400 in a state-leading 47.72 and also was third in the 200 with 21.87 in Class 2A. He also anchored River Ridge to a state-leading 41.49 time in the 4x100.

- Eastlake's boys ran 3:18.68 to win the 4A 4x400 relay.

Top Teams:

The Federal Way girls were already state champions without Cunliffe. With her, they were a super-team and scored 72 points. Class 3A champs Kamiakin scored 123 points to fend off Holy Names for the girls team title. And in 2A it was Sehome's girls taking it with 70.50 points.

Federal Way also won the 4A boys title with 73 points, the same number that Bellevue amassed to win the 3A boys title. Olympic scored 52 to win the 2A team crown.

Top Competition: The well-matched seniors Jonathan Green of Ephrata and Zachary Smith of Olympic went toe-to-toe in very close races in the 2A sprints. In the 100, Green edged Smith 10.61 to 10.64. In the 200, it was Smith getting the upper hand 21.59 to 21.60. Smith also pushed Olympic to the 4x100 title. Green cast his lot in the 400 and finished third there.

Record-breaker: Alexa Efraimson came into the state meet feeling like her results hadn't lived up to the quality of her workouts. But that began to change in the 1,600 meters final, where she ran unchallenged into the record books with 4:33.29. That's the 1,600 record and surpasses the best outdoor miles on record as well. Faster than Polly Plumer, Christine Babcock, Kim Gallagher, etc.
