Carlos Davis lets fly with record 212-5 DT

 

State Meet Highlights

 
Missouri's four classes come together at Dwight Reed Stadium in Jefferson City for the track and field championships. This was a good year in the Show Me State, where Carlos Davis launched a US#1 in the discus and several state records were broken (including Davis).


Top Performances:

 
- On the second throw of his series, Carlos Davis of Blue Spring hit the biggest discus mark in state history with 212-5. It was his only throw over 200 feet. His twin brother, Khalil, was second with 197-0.

 
- Spencer Haik of Glendale showed his mettle in Class 4 by winning the 1600 in 4:09.41. He ran the first half of his race in 2:01.3. In the 3200, he closed in 59.8 to win that race in 9:14.09.

 
- Jasmine Barge from McCluer North won the 300 hurdles in 41.79 seconds. She also won the 100 hurdles in 14.53 and the final was contested into a 3.0 headwind. She also split 55.8 on the winning 4x400 relay (3:48.82).

 
- Hannah Long of Eureka dominated the Class 4 distance races – taking the 800 in 2:10.78, the 1600 in 4:46.21 and the 3200 in 10:34.26. She also split 2:09.8 on the winning 4x800 relay.

 
- Marcus Davis of Hazelwood Central won the 400 in 47.07. He also anchored the second-place 4x400 in Class 4.

 
- Ashley Henderson of Hazelwood Central won the Class 4 girls 100 (11.86) and the 200 (24.12).


- The boys from Christian Brothers College put together an excellent 4x400, clocking 3:14.98 to get within a second of the all-time state record in the Class 4 finals.


- Kezia Martin of Jefferson City jumped 39-6.25 to win a competitive Class 4 triple jump.


- Desirea Buerge of Webb City threw 153-8 on her first attempt to win the Class 4 girls discus. She was third in the shot put.


- Asia Cole of Fort Osage won the Class 4 shot put with 45-5.50 and was second in the discus.


- Sierra Maddox of Jackson cleared 12-6 for the second straight year to repeat in the Class 4 girls pole vault.


- Nekiesha Bailey of North Kansas City won the Class 4 girls high jump with a clearance at 5-8.


- Taylor Werner of Ste. Genevieve was dominant in the Class 3 distance races, taking the 800 (2:15.18), the 1600 (US#5 4:44.26) and the 3200 (US#21 10:19.15). That 3200 was also an all-time state best.


- Charles Jones Jr. of Cardinal Ritter was the top male athlete in the state this spring and he won the Class 3 state titles in the 400 (47.01) and 800 (1:50.98). He also ran a leg on Ritter's winning 4x400 relay (3:19.98). That's one of the best 400-800 doubles in the country. And later, at US Juniors, Jones broke the state's all-time 800 mark with 1:49.54.


- Southern Boone's Landon Bartel went 7-0 to win the high jump and also took the long jump with best of 23-1.75w in Class 3. He was also fifth in the triple jump.


- Anglerne Annelus of Grandview ran 11.80 and 24.11w to win the Class 3 girls sprint titles. She was also part of a Class 3 meet record-breaking 4x200 relay.


- Ashanti Hutton of Grandview won the Class 3 400 with 55.38 and was also third in the 200 with 24.99w.


- Sara Rhine of Eldon won the Class 3 high jump at 5-7.75 and also placed third in the long jump.


- Emily Presley of St. Clair won the Class 3 pole vault with a state-leading 12-6 clearance.


- The McCluer South-Berkeley girls ran 47.19 to win the Class 3 4x100 relay with a group that included Kamira Franklin and freshmen Octavia Cato and Raheema Westfall. Franklin and Westfall were also part of a lineup that won the 4x400.


- Michael Wells from the Cleveland Junior Naval Academy was a dominant figure in Class 2, with victories in the 100 (10.87), the 200 (21.65) and the 400 (49.11).


- Sophomore Sophia Rivera of Brentwood doubled in the Class 2 throws, with winning marks of 45-8 in the shot put and 129-11 in the discus. Later, she broke the all-time state best in the javelin with 157-0.

 

- Freshman Carlie Queen of Summit Christian Academy broke a Class 2 meet record with her 5-7.75 high jump clearance. She was also third in the pole vault.


Top Teams:


The Blue Spring boys rolled up a big 83 points to win the Class 4 team championship. McCluer North won the girls Class 4 title with 65 points.


In Class 3, the Grandview and Liberty North boys went into the history books together as co-champions with 64 points. The Grandview girls scored 63 points to edge McCluer North-Berkeley (58).


Top Competition: One of the best high jump competitions of any state meet came at Class 3 in Missouri. Landon Bartel of Southern Boone made 7-0 (US#11) to tie the championship meet record and Harvey Kendall of Grandview cleared 6-10 (US#35) for second.


Record-breaker: Jones, Long, Werner, Barge and Rivera all broke all-time state records this spring but Carlos Davis' performance at the state meet in the discus ring stands out. He got the big throw right when he needed it and got a US#1 mark in the process.
