NLI Signing Dates Change for 2014-2015 Year

The dates governing when a National Letter of Intent may be signed have changed significantly this year for athletes participating in Cross Country and Track and Field. In recent years, the signing period typically would open in early February and stay open until August 1st. But that was then.

Starting with the 2014-2015 signing year (effecting 2015 HS graduates), there will be an Early Signing Period (11/12 - 11/19), then a Regular Signing Period (4/15 - 8/1).

The implications of the change are significant. The Fall signing period goes Weds 11/12 to Weds 11/19, straddling CIF Prelims in California in most sections. While signing day/week always proves to be an exciting distraction in the off season, it could be a serious distraction for both high school athletes and coaches, as well as college coaches, as they move into championship season.

The change in the Spring is significant as well. While the old early February date kept the flurry of NLI activity as a pre-season endeavor, the new April 15th date puts is smack dab in the middle of track season. The timing is late enough that senior track times suddenly can make a lot more difference in an athlete's recruitability, making 2015 times relevant all the way through and including the Arcadia Invitational, which is typically the second week of April.

Here is the table of 2014-2015 signing dates with a link to the NLI site below -

So the new "Early Signing Period" starts Wednesday. It will be very interesting to see how many people take advantage of it.
