Eli Krahn rises to top in 1600-3200 sweep

State Meet Highlights

The Minnesota (MSHSL) state championships are held at Hamline University and are comprised of A (small) and AA (large) classifications. Oddly in Minnesota, nine places score in the finals and first place is worth 12 points. Eli Krahn returned to the front of the pack in the distance fields and additional headlines went to multi-event star Shaina Burns, jumper Mia Barron and hurdler Alexandra Williams.

Top Performances:

- Sophomore Eli Krahn of Stillwater Area, coming all the way back from an injury that ruined his cross country season, scored a big double by taking the AA 1600 (4:13.54) and the 3200 (9:00.08).

- Michael Smith of Wayzata ran 47.99 to win the AA 400 meters. He also ran anchor on Wayzata's winning 4x400 relay team that clocked 3:18.57.

- Terrance Bowers of Hopkins won the AA horizontal jumps with 22-7 and 48-2.

- Payton Otterdahl of Rosemount swept the AA throws with 61-0.50 in the shot put and 173-6 in the discus.

- Mia Barron won the long jump with 19-1.50, dealing with a slight headwind that prevented her from breaking the meet record. She did, however, break the record in the triple jump with 40-5.50.

- Junior Taylor Wiebke of Kasson-Mantorville cleared 5-9 to win the high jump.

- Shaina Burns of Lakeville South won the 100 hurdles, placed third in the 300 hurdles, won the shot put (44-10.50).

- Kasie Vollmer of Prior Lake won the AA discus title with a throw of 152-10.

- Alexandra Williams ran 14.22 in the 100 hurdles prelim, right off her new all-time state best. But in the finals she fell and placed eighth while Shania Burns took the victory in 14.44.

- Senior Emily Castanias of Chanhassen won the AA 3200 in 10:28.58.

- Freshman Tess Misgen of Shakopee beat a strong field in the 1600 meters in 4:50.78.

- Jon Tollefson of St. Croix Lutheran, a junior, broke the Class A record in the 110 hurdles with 14.36 and he also won the 300 hurdles in 38.32 in a photo finish over Samuel Lundquist of Minnehaha Academy.

- Shane Streich of Waseca won the Class A 800 but his fastest time (1:51.92) was in the prelims. He also won the 1600 in 4:13.80.

- Tyler Beehler of Foley broke the Class A 200 meters record in the prelims when he timed 21.45. He won both the 100 and 200.

- Katelyn Weber of St. Clair swept the Class A throws with 43-2.75 in the shot put and 126-1 in the discus. All six of Weber's throws in the SP surpassed 40 feet – and all six were long enough to win the competition.

- Eighth grader Jia Lewis won the Class A sprint double with 12.36 and 25.06.

Top Teams:

The Minnetonka girls scored 80 points to overcome Cretin-Derham Hall's 66-point haul in the 100-200-400. Meanwhile, Hopkins scored 70 points to win the boys title, with Wayzata second.

Sisters Jia and Jada Lewis scored a bunch of sprint points to lead Minneapolis Edison to the A girls title with 40 points. Minnehaha won the boys A title with 50.

Top Competition: Teammates Brieasha Hunter and Megan Linder proved to be the fastest girls in the state and they went 1-2 in the 100, 200 and 400 to rack up all of the team's 66 points. In the 100 meters it was Hunter over Linder 12.28 to 12.43. In the 200, the order was reversed, with Linder going 24.78 to Hunter's 24.82. And in the 400 it was Hunter over Linder 55.12 to 55.17.

Record-breaker: Mia Barron's sweep in the jumps was at the heart of Minnetonka's run to the team title and her triple jump mark broke the state meet record. Barron had mark of 19-10 at her section meet in the long jump but there was no wind gauge. The longest triple jump in state history belongs to Jordan Helgren of Wayzata (41-1.75 in 2008).
