State Meet Highlights

The RIIL Track and Field Championships come a week after the class championships and take place at Brown University in Providence. Rhode Island is a small state with that had a lot of quality in 2014, including Stanford-bound senior Maddy Berkson.

Top Performances:

- Maddy Berkson of Classical put her stamp on her final state meet by winning the 800 (2:12.32), the 1500 (4:26.88, a state record) and also placed fifth in the 3,000 on short rest. Then, she capped it off by anchoring Classical to a victory in the 4x400 (3:53.91), splitting a 57.

- Junior Quashira McIntosh of Hope ran off with titles in the 100 (11.96) and 200 (24.73) for the third straight year. She also anchored Hope's winning 4x100 relay.

- Zachery Emrich of North Kingston, a senior, doubled in the 400 (48.71) and 800 (1:56.02).

- Eliza Rego, a sophomore from La Salle, gave everything that Berkson could handle in that 1,500 and finished in 4:29.96. Rego also ran 2:15.55 for fourth in the 800 and placed seventh in the 3,000.

- Senior Colin Tierney of Bishop Hendricken ran 8:50.17 to win the boys 3,000.

- Alicia Holloway of Classical doubled in the hurdles, running 15.06 and 44.93.

- Benjamin Stewart of North Kingstown broke a state meet record in the 300 hurdles with 38.13. He was also on the winning 4x400 relay.

- Junior Alva Hicks of Classical won the girls discus by 16 feet, with a best toss of 143-7. She also won the shot put with 41-6 and was second in the hammer.

- Ethan Wright of Narragansett won the boys javelin with 195-7.

Top Teams:

With Berkson leading the way, Classical overwhelmed the girls competition with 130 team points. On the boys side, North Kingston edged Classical 94-88 for the team title.

Top Competition:

It's impossible to ignore that the featured event in Rhode Island is the hammer. Not only is the state one of the few to compete in the high school hammer, but it's got an avid following and Bob Gourley's weekly rankings list is also generated in Rhode Island. The boys competition was especially good, with sophomore Bobby Colantonio of Barrington throwing 215-6 to beat his junior teammate, Adam Kelly (213-8). Seven boys threw 180 feet or better. Colantonio and Kelly finished their seasons ranked third and fourth nationally.

Record-breaker: Maddy Berkson demonstrated her range by running every distance between 400 and 3,000, but in breaking her own record in the 1,500 meters she found her sweet spot. Her time of 4:26.88 ranked sixth nationally in 2014.
