Freshman Irby sweeps 100, 200 and 400

State Meet Highlights

Indiana operates a single-class high school track and field championship on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. (One interesting thing about Indiana is that there is no triple jump at the HS level). Among the headliners was Pike freshman Lynna Irby, who is chasing legends in order to become the fastest girl in state history.

Top Performances:

- Lynna Irby was already an age-group phenom before entering high school and she carried that through her first year at Pike. She ran US#16 11.61 to win the 100 meters, 24.07 to win the 200 and 54.38 to win the 400. She is the first freshman to sweep all three events since Olympic champion Maicel Malone did it in 1984 and the first of any grade to do it in 17 years.

- Junior Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka, recovered from stress fractures in both feet, returned in time to make a statement in the 3,200 with a resounding state record victory in US#13 10:14.43. She beat runner-up Kelcy Welch of Carmel by 30 seconds.

- Senior Symone Black of Fort Wayne Concordia dominated the hurdles races, taking the 100s in 14.17 and the 300s in a state record time of US#8 41.36.

- Yamani Hunter of Benjamin Bosse, a junior, won the long jump with US#18 19-7.75.

- Junior Kayla Smith of Lawrence Central cleared 13-0 to win the pole vault.

- Senior Adriana Brown of Lawrence Central won the discus with 160-2 and placed second in the shot put with 47-2.50.

- Three teams ran under 9:10 in the girls 4x800, led by West Lafayette in 9:07.45.

- Daniel Kuhn of Shelbyville, a senior, won the 800 in US#17 1:50.91. Behind him, sophomore Hari Sathyamurthy of Brownsburg ran US#38 1:51.58.

- Joe Murphy of Lawrenceville North won the 1600 in 4:11.05, leading a string of nine straight seniors across the finish line.

- Clayton Bowie, an Ohio State-bound senior from Southport, capped his season with 9:06.63 for his second consecutive win in the 3,200 meters.

- Senior Justin Veteto of Center Grove ran US#12 36.85 to win the 300 hurdles and was second to Hamilton Southeastern's Justin Wright (14.09) in the 110 hurdles with 14.16. Wright suffered a bad fall in the 300 hurdles final had left the track in an ambulance (but he was OK).

- Junior Deakin Volz of Bloomington South jumped 17-0.50 to win the pole vault. He became the state's all-time leader in the event in 2014, with 17-3.

- Gelon Robinson, a senior from Lake Central , threw US#6 197-7 to win the discus.

- Chesterton ran 7:44.87 to win the boys 4x800, good for US#27.

- Rachel Mather of Noblesville won the high jump at 5-9 and also placed third in the pole vault with 12-9.

- Freshman Taylor Nicholson of Avon won the 1,600 meters in 4:51.88 with a huge PR.

Top Teams:

Lawrence Central got big points in the field events on the way to the girls team championship with 47 points. West (Gary) won its first boys title in 34 years by scoring just enough points in the 4x400 to overtake Carmel, 41-39. Carmel dropped the baton in the critical final race.

Top Competition:

There were 15 girls in the U.S. this spring who achieved marks of 48 feet or better and two of them were from Indiana. In the state finals, Liz Iversen of Martinsville threw 47-9.75 on her third throw and that held up for the win. Adriana of Lawrence Central threw 47-2.50 and settled for second.

Record-breakers: Anna Rohrer and Symone Black broke all-time state records in the championship meet. Rohrer went on to add a second record in the 5,000 when she won the New Balance Nationals Outdoor title in that event in Greensboro. Black, who is headed to Purdue, competed in the Midwest Meet of Champs but did not improve her times.
