Rivers outlasts DeBalsi in thrilling 1600

State Meet Highlights

The Connecticut (CIAC) State Championships follow the five class championships that take place 4-7 days prior. In CT, it's called "The Open" championship and it was contested on a Monday. But it's here where the best finally matchup against the best. Distance runners Hannah DeBalsi and Alex Ostberg, who later won NBNO titles, were actually upstaged in this meet by sophomore Danae Rivers and senior Christian Alvarado.

Top Performances:

- In a race where five guys ran under 4:16, senior Christian Alvarado of Fairfield Prep took the victory in 4:12.38, edging Wilton's Spencer Brown (4:12.43). Alvarado also won the 3,200 in 9:11.54.

- Sophomore Danae Rivers of Wilbur Cross had a big meet, taking the 800 as expected in 2:14.10 and then out-dueling Hannah DeBalsi in an exciting 1,600 in 4:47.45. She also ran on the winning 4x400 relay squad.

- Sophomore Hannah DeBalsi of Staples won the 3200 comfortably in 10:24.06 and also was within a stride of Rivers in the 1,600. (More on that below).

- Junior Alex Ostberg of Darien placed second in the 3,200 (9:13.34) and third in the 1,600 (4:15.10). He also ran on Darien's winning 4x800 relay.

- Anna Sulger, a junior from Darien, was a double winner in the 200 (25.49) and 400 (56.73).

- Freshman Cassidy Palmer of Stafford won the girls 100 in 12.26.

- Jaliyah White of Hillhouse tied the meet record in the 300 hurdles with 43.48.

- Matt Chisholm of Farmington won the 800 meters in 1:53.61.

- The Tolland girls ran 9:11.71 to break the meet record in the 4x800 relay. They were pressed all the way by New Milford (9:13.70), which also ran under the old record.

- Nicholas Lombardo of Darien won the high jump (6-4), the long jump (22-6) and placed fourth in the triple jump (43-3).

Top Teams:

Darien did not win either of the Class L team titles but it swept both the boys and girls titles at "The Open" championship. The teams were a little bit better built for big-meet competition with the likes of Ostberg and Lombardo on the boys side and Sulger leading the charge on the girls side.

Top Competition:

The girls 1600 meeting between DeBalsi and Rivers became the race of the day as the two sophomores ran in lock step most of the way. Rivers, the 800-meter champ, got a slight advantage running on the outside of DeBalsi in the final 50 and held on for the win. Afterward, DeBalsi said she considered diving to try and win but thought she might hit Rivers if she tried it. Rivers ran 4:47.45 for US#20 and DeBalsi ran 4:47.50.

Record-breaker: The notable record out of this meet came from Jaliyah White in the 300 hurdles. She didn't break the record with her 43.48, but she tied Katy Sprout's mark from 2013, and it's an all-time state record as well.
