It’s a race to state with as many of five schools ready to replace St. Teresa on top

It looked like there would be a new 1A Girls team champion in 2014 with the threats of Decatur St. Teresa being moved up to 2A because of the new IHSA success factor. With the IHSA holding off on implementing this for one year, the Bulldogs live to run another year in 1A.

This could be a closer team battle in this classification than we are used to seeing. St. Teresa does have four runners back from last year’s state championship team. The team does lose all-everything Rachel Devereux who graduated. There are many teams that could end up first this season including Rochester, Urbana University, Kewanee Wethersfield, and St. Joseph-Ogden to name a few.

Here is how we see the teams in 1A Girls now. It does not mean they will end up in the same positions when we get to Detweiller in November. Nevertheless, it should be an exciting season with a number of schools moving in and out of the number one position.

Top 25 Teams

1 – Decatur St. Teresa

Coach – Todd Volhand

2013 Finish – 1st – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Lauren Evelti JR (36,18:40), Bree Tschosik SR (38,18:42), Kelsey Cleary JR (50, 18:57), Ashton Jerger JR (80, 19:33),Emily Burgener SR, Amber Johnson JR, Emma Reedy SR, Mackenzie Kleinst SO, Kaitlyn Pruitt JR.

Outlook – The Bulldogs survive the bump and remain in 1A for the 2014 season. In the seven years of the 3 class system in cross country, St. Teresa has been dominant winning the team championship the last four years. This year the climb to the top will be a little more difficult especially with the graduation of Rachel Devereux who was a part of those 4 state championship teams.

“Rachel Devereux is a big loss because of the spirit and heart she brought every day,” said St. Teresa coach Todd Vohland. “She certainly impacted everyone.  You don't replace her, Rachel is a once in a career type person.”

This team does have a good core returning led by junior Lauren Evelti. “Lauren is going to be the X-factor,” added Vohland. “She missed most of the track season with an injury so I look forward to seeing her when she returns tomorrow.  Potentially she is our #1 and an All-State contender.” Bree Tschosik and Kelsey Cleary have the state meet experience and could push Evelti for the #1 spot on the team according to Vohland. It could be a merry-go-round with these runners trading off for positions. That could be a good thing for Vohland. Emily Burgener had a good track season and could be in the top five. Ashton Jerger was the seventh runner last year at state. She could move into the top five as well. Pamela Tacud is an incoming freshman that could push the returning runners in the top five. She could be a surprise as the year develops.

Even with the loss of Devereux, this team is deep and does have good leadership on and off the course. “These seniors are leaders in the classroom and eager to step out of the shadows,” concluded Coach Vohland. St. Teresa lives and dies with the pack. It will again be one of the reasons why this team will be pushing for the fifth state championship in the school’s history. The team could do this if they have a 45 second five runner spread along with two runners in the top 25 at Detweiller in November.

2 – Rochester

Coach – Bill Owens

2013 Finish – 2nd – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Taylor Bartolozzi JR (9,17:47), Madeline Campbell SO (57,19:06), Annie Gegen SO (95,19:45), Abby Reicken SR (106,19:56), Kennedy Duffy JR, Kaitlyn Sutker SO, Katherine Judy SR, Haley Simpkins SR, Molly Richards SO, Megan Western SR.

Newcomers – Kara Burke (competed in Volleyball in 2013), Ellie Tjelmeland (competed in Tennis in 2013).

Outlook – This team was figured to be the team to beat as this season started. That changed however with the loss of Meagan McNicholas who was the projected to challenge for the top spot this season. “Meagan spent track season in a boot and has issues with other injuries at other times,” said Coach Bill Owens. “She has opted to sit out this season to give her body a break from racing in hopes of a better track season as well as Basketball where she also excels. She hopes to come back to Cross Country her senior year.”

Owens still has four runners returning led by Taylor Bartolozzi who finished ninth a year ago. The junior was in an auto accident last spring causing her to miss most of the track season. She had a good summer of training and should be in peak shape this fall. Annie Gegen, according to Owens, had a great summer of training. She could step into the spot where McNicholas was projected to be. Madeline Campbell and Abby Reicken were also runners that ran in state last season that will factor in the top five. Newcomers from other sports Kara Burke and Ellie Tjelmeland have adapted well to running this summer and could end up challenging for the top five.

Even with the loss of an all-state runner like McNicholas, the Rockets will still challenge for a trophy in 2014. Bartolozzi should challenge for a top five finish. They could also get all-state performances from Campbell and Gegen. The key for this team will be their 2-5 split. The pack needs to be within 55 seconds of Bartolozzi. If the split for 2-5 is 40 seconds or better, this team could leave Peoria with a state championship.

3 – Kewanee Wethersfield

Coach – Creston Fenn

2013 Finish – 4th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Kirstie Ramsey SO (14,17:57), Kaitlyn Cline SR (60,19:12), Olivia Draminski JR (70, 19:24), Kylie Cline SR (99,19:50), Dana Baele SR (101,19:51), Jacelyn Van Antwerp JR (153,21:02), Jessica Mercer JR.

Newcomers – Meghan Curran, Sarah Gomez (competed in Volleyball in 2013).

Outlook – If there was ever a surprise at the state meet last year, it was the emergence of Wethersfield as they climbed up the rankings during the season culminating with a fourth place state finish. The sights are set higher for this team with what they did a year ago. “This has been our best summer as a team in our 6 year history. In a good way, last year’s success created great expectations for the team this year,” said Coach Creston Fenn. “After last season was over, the girls couldn't wait for summer running to begin. With that anticipation, they expected to be challenged more this summer. The girls ran more miles at a faster pace. They put in the extra work with strength and band exercises. They are injury free and have a great foundation leading into the season.”

One of the reasons why this team will be in the hunt for a trophy is that return six from last year’s state team. Kirstie Ramsey was running her first year of cross country last fall. The then freshman finished fourteenth as the team’s first runner. With a year of experience under her belt, expect Ramsey to challenge for a top five finish in November. There was a gap between Ramsey and the rest of the pack last fall. That could diminish this season. Kaitlyn Cline and Olivia Draminski have been running step for step with Ramsey this summer. The two runners could be in the top 40 by the end of the year boosting the trophy possibilities for this team. Sarah Gomez, who is running after competing in volleyball a year ago, could be a surprise for this team. She ran track last spring and could give a boost for this team.

The sky is the limit for this team and they know it especially after what they accomplished a year ago. They will not be a surprise when they step to the starting line instead being a marked team. They could use that to an advantage. “You always want to improve from what you did the year before,” added Fenn. “Even with the loss of an extraordinary runner and leader, Maddie Jackson, the team expects improvement. We return 6 of our top 7, and hope to be a contender for one of the top spots at regionals, sectionals, and state.” If the gap between Ramsey and the pack can stay under one minute with the overall split at 90 seconds or better, a state championship could be heading back to western Illinois.

4 – Urbana University

Coach – Doug Mynatt

2013 Finish – 11th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Annemarie Michael SO (10,17:50), Berit Hudson-Rasmussen JR (76,19:28), Tori Aber SO (112, 20:03), Katie Tender JR (113,20:05), Ha-ih Son SO (127,20:27), Maya Dutta SR (150, 20:52), Carmen Gewith SR, Grace Taylor SO, Athena Feng JR, Mary Feser SR.

Newcomers – Arielle Summitt FR, Zina Dolan SO (competed in swimming in 2013)

Outlook – It will not be a surprise if Urbana University comes back to their campus with a trophy after state. At the end of the track season, this team was projected to be a top ten squad. With the runners that are entering the program for the 2014 season, Coach Doug Mynatt could have a team that could be shooting for a higher spot. Six of seven from last year’s eleventh place team are back.

Annemarie Michael did not run her best race of the season at state last fall. She still finished tenth however. Michael did have a great track season finishing 2nd in the 800 and 4th in the 1600. She should be one of the top runners in 1A this season. She could have company with her up front. Freshman Arielle Summitt broke Michael’s state record in last year’s IESA state meet. She will make a huge impact on this team. It would not surprise me if she finishes in the top five individually. The surprise could be Sophomore Zina Dolan. She was a top three runner on her eight grade team behind Michael two years ago. Last school year, she decided to concentrate on swimming. She could give a boost to the top five on this squad.

With the addition of Summitt and Dolan along with basically their entire top seven from last year, this is a team to watch. In a year where there could be a surplus of individual runners in the first 15 at state, Michael and Summitt giving the team single digit points gives this team an advantage. Berit Hudson-Rasmussen will lead the second pack that will need to stay within 30 seconds of each other. This team takes a trophy back if their third runner is 40th or better with a 30 second split.

5 – St. Joseph-Ogden

Coach – Jason Retz

2013 Finish – 6th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Abby Fisher SR (71,19:25), Keely Smith SO (75,19:27), Emma Melchior JR (87,19:37), Abby Gawthorp JR (105,19:56), Jessica Kassuelke SR (160, 21:12), Kamry Orcutt JR (182,21:58), Elizabeth Papp SR.

Newcomers – Hanna Atwood SO (competed in track 2013)

Outlook – Six runners return from last year’s state team. The key to this squad will be the ability of having a runner in the top forty or better come state meet time. The talent is there for that to happen. Abby Fisher, Keely Smith, and Emma Melchoir will all vie for the top spot. SJO lives and dies by pack running. We should see more of the same in 2014. The gap between their first four runners is projected to be 25 seconds. If they can get closer by the end of the season, this team could be dangerous.

The key for this team is developing a strong fifth runner to have an under 60 second split for their first five runners. Hanna Atwood, who qualified for state in track last spring, could be a runner that steps into that spot. Jessica Kassuelke or possibly a couple of freshmen according to Coach Jason Retz could step into that spot. They team is deep which gives Retz possibilities. “Although we only lost our #1 runner from last year we will be looking for someone to step into that #1 position this year,” Retz said. “If we can have a low stick, the sky is the limit with this team.”

6 – Petersburg PORTA

Coach – Jim Brauer

2013 Finish – 8th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Adrienne Brauer JR (5th,17:33), Maria Brauer JR (6,17:34), Anna Tamborski JR (107,20:01), Keely Miller JR (124,20:21), Katherine Pickerill JR (165,21:22), Allison Cummings SR (170,21:32), Natalie Beard SO (180,21:55), Madison Kuehl SO, Audie Bell SO, Devan Burris SR.

Outlook – Just like Urbana University, PORTA will live off the strength of their first two runners. Adrienne and Maria Brauer finished together in fifth / sixth last fall. They will challenge in the top five again giving the Bluejays a healthy advantage. Coach Jim Brauer returns all top seven runners from last year’s eighth place state team.

It will come down to getting their 3-5 pack closer to the Brauer sisters. “I expect a stronger 3-4-5 this year.  Anna Tamborski (3) was out with a stress fracture literally from the first week of the season until sectional week last year,” Coach Brauer said. “Keely Miller (4) and Katherine Pickerill (5) were first year runners last season, so I expect good improvement from them.”

You have to ignore the 1-5 split on this team. With the Brauer sisters pushing to be close to 17 minutes this season, the big split is a given. The key will be getting the 3-5 closer within that pack. Last year, that split was close to 80 seconds. That needs to be split in half in 2014. This team will be in contention for a trophy if top five finishes are achieved by Maria and Adrienne, and the 3-5 pack starts between 70-80th place at the state meet.

7 – Tolono Unity

Coach – Gary Wieneke

2013 Finish – 5th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Taylor Renfroe JR (39,18:44), Sisay Eisenmenger SR (40,18:45), Nicole Bagwell SO (47,18:56), Rhoda Brucker SR (156,21:03), Morgan Ander SO, Lauren Urie SO, Kenzie Dodds SR, Julia Gonzalez SO.

Outlook – Four runners return from a team that finished in the top five a year ago. It could achieve the same thing in 2014. Taylor Renfroe and Sisay Eisenmenger finished in the top 40 at the state meet last fall. The potential is there for them to possibly capture top 25 positions this season. Nicole Bagwell was a number one runner during the 2013 season for this team. The possibility of her placing in the top 25 is strong also.

The key for this team is having the split on five under 90 seconds. Last year, that did not happen. Rhoda Brucker, Kenzie Dodds, and Morgan Ander are all runners that could step into the four / five spot. This team could make a difference in the team title run, but the pack will be the main thing for the reason of its success.

8 – Carterville

Coach – Heather Webb

2013 Finish – 14th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Aurora Breeden SR (44,18:54), Megan Adams SO (88,19:39), Madison Meyer JR (125,20:25), Scarlett DeRouse SR (144,20:47), Kelly Adams SR (200,23:21).

Newcomers – Ashlee Childers JR (did not compete in 2013), Shelby Olsen FR.

Outlook – This team should be the top team in 1A southern Illinois this year. They did lose #2 runner Kami Hankins who moved back to Oklahoma. Five return from last year’s team that could surprise some fans this season. Aurora Breeden was a top 50 runner a year ago at state. Do not be surprised if she challenges for an all-state spot this year. Scarlett DeRouse battled foot injuries last year finishing as the fifth runner for the team at state. She could replace Hankins as the number 2 runner. Ashlee Childers, who did not compete last year, and Freshman Shelby Olsen are two runners that could strengthen their top five. Madison Meyer, who had a successful track season, could also be a factor to this team’s success.

“The girls have put in a lot of miles this summer and still are expecting to win sectionals and compete for a top 10 spot,” said Coach Heather Webb. “Our 4-5 runners should be stronger this year. Looking to get all girls running under 20 minutes, which is a very realistic goal.”

9 – Eureka

Coach – Dave Tapp

2013 Finish – 10th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Quincy McSweeney SR (54,19:12), Steffani Wiegand SR (93,19:44), Ashlyn Lockart JR (102,19:52), McKenzie Walz SO (119,20:10), Meaghan Beaterhead (SR (123,20:20), Meghan Waller SO (136,20:39), Kelsee Plattner JR, Miah Hirstein JR, Michaela Wiegand JR.

Newcomers – Natalie Bardwell FR.

Outlook – The Hornets were projected to be a top five team in 1A this fall with all seven runners coming back from last year’s top ten finishing squad. Coach Dave Tapp did take a hit when Mercer Mack, who was their second runner on last year’s team, chose not to compete in Cross Country this fall. Still, this team should be making some noise by the end of the year.

Quincy McSweeney again should be the top runner for this squad looking to improve on last year’s 54th place finish. The key to their success last season was having a 1-5 split under 60 seconds. Even without Mack, the pack led by Steffani Wiegand could get that split even closer together. Tapp also expects Freshman Natalie Bardwell to be in the mix of the top five for this team by the time the state series starts. A top 30 finish by McSweeney and an under 50 second 5 runner split could push this team into the top five. “If all the girls stay healthy, I would expect them to see them at state and placing in the top 5 teams,” said Tapp.

10 – Canton

Coach – Chancy Whittington

2013 Finish – 8th – 1A Elmwood Sectional

Returnees – Nicole Beebe JR (20,18:05), Mackenzie Leffler SR, Hannah Kees SO, Savannah Smith SR, Katie Wittmer SO, Leah Umbarger SR, Payton Schaub SR.

Newcomers – Joy Sandman (competed in Volleyball in 2013). Jamie Goldring FR, Molly Linder FR, Elyse Matthews FR, Kaitlyn Matthews FR.

Outlook – This team should be a surprise by the time the state series comes around in mid-October. Six runners return from last year’s eight place finish at the Elmwood Sectional. “Last year’s team was a lot of inexperienced runners and some did not have a great base to start the season.  This summer the team has done a great job of working hard and building their base,” said Coach Chancy Whittington.

Nicole Beebe achieved all-state honors finishing 20th a year ago. She has the potential to place in the top ten in 2014. Mackenzie Leffler should lead a strong pack that needs to stay a little bit closer to Beebe. At sectionals last year, the 1-5 split was 150 seconds. That needs to come down this year. A good freshman squad led by Jamie Goldring could help with that. “We would like to qualify for state this year,” said Whittington. “Last year we were 8th at sectionals and our school has never had a Girls team qualify for state.” It could happen in 2014 especially with this team.

11 – Henry-Senachwine

Coach – Clark Owsley

2013 Finish – 12th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Jilian Monier SR (46,18:46), Ronna Pettis JR (84,19:36), Melanie Yanke SR (131,20:32), Emma Cluskey SR (138,20:41), Brittnei Oser SR.

Outlook – This is a team that surprised some at the end of the year making it to Peoria. Their 12th place finish and four runners coming back from that squad will not give onlookers the opportunity to call this team a surprise. The quality is there to get this team back to Peoria in November.

Jilian Monier and Ronna Pettis should be closer together this season. There was a gap of 50 seconds between the two last year at state. During the year, they were closer together in competition. This team will be successful if they are within 10 seconds of each other when the moment counts. Melanie Yanke could be a runner that could surprise this season and finish in the top 75 at state. Monier and or Pettis have the talent to be in the top 30 at Detweiller. The key will be having a 90 second 1-5 split behind them. “Our goals are simple: We want to be injury-free going into the postseason and compete for a top-five spot at our Sectional,” said Coach Clark Ownsby. “Every returning runner has a more focused attitude about the team's success going into this season, so despite our lack of numbers, I'm confident they'll do the work required to be in a position to compete as a team by November.”

12 – Effingham St. Anthony

Coach – Kevin Wiedman

2013 Finish – 8th – 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Returnees – Anna Sophia Keller SO (1,16:35), Carson Fonner JR, Elizabeth Falconberg JR, Mary Claire Wegman SO, Rachel Wortman SO, Allison Spraul JR.

Outlook – With no seniors projected to be in the top seven, this will be a young team that could have their ups and downs during the year. It does help when you have a first runner in Anna Sophia Keller that can give you one point in every meet that she steps to the line. This team is more than Keller and we should see that as the season develops. All seven of last year’s runners return from last year’s 8th place sectional team.

We will talk more about Keller in our 1A individual preview. Here again, let’s ignore the possible 1-5 split. It will be big. The key will be the 2-5 spread. Carson Fonner and Elizabeth Falconberg will lead the pack this fall. The gap between Keller and the two was close to 3 minutes at sectionals. That needs to come down. More importantly, the 2-5 split was 2 minutes. This team could qualify for the state meet, but the 2-5 split needs to be between 60-70 seconds with Fonner being within 2 minutes of Keller. It could happen.

13 – Freeburg

Coach – Carl Florczyk

2013 Finish – 18th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Kristen Collier SO (49,18:57), Emily Marler SR (96,19:45), Lindsey Monk SR (120,20:13), Ashley Gilmore SO (132,20:33), Taylor Haskenhoff (188,22:19), Haley Alt (194,22:47), Megan Busch JR, Taylor Ganz JR, Allison Hoffmann SR, Tess Wolf JR.

Newcomers – Kayla Whitworth FR.

Outlook – This is the one team that will challenge Carterville for Southern Illinois supremacy. Six of last year’s seven return from last year’s team that finished 18th at state. Emily Marler and Lindsey Monk have had good summers and are expected to be the front runners according to Coach Carl Florczyk. Kristen Collier, who was the team’s first runner at state should push for the top stop as well.

This team is deep which will help in a possible tenth place finish at state. One runner that could give this team a boost is Freshman Kayla Whitworth. She ran 5:23 for 1600 last spring in 8th grade. The addition of her in their top five could be a big boost. “I am very excited about this team,” Florczyk said. “There is a great deal of talent and they worked really hard this summer.”

14 – Byron

Coach – Mike McHale

2013 Finish – 16th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Bri Williams JR (103,19:53), Kaitlyn Buck SR (115,20:06), Aya Bridgeland SR (116,20:07), Paige Holloway SO (163,21:16), Challan Jackson JR, Karla Stoker SO, Martha Hodapp JR, Madi Franklin SO.

Outlook – This team will take a big hit with the graduation of state runner-up Kelsey Hildreth. Still, this squad returns four from last year’s state squad. Bri Williams or Kaitlyn Buck have the potential to place in the top 70 in November. Along with that, they will give the leadership on the team that Coach Mike McCale will need. The key for this team will be the 1-5 split. It right now is projected near 110 seconds. If the split can get closer to 70 seconds, this team could make a return trip to Detweiller in November.

15 – Elmwood-Brimfield

Coach – Hayley Davis

2013 Finish – 15th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Kendra Gorham SR (92,19:43), Cassie Karn SO (98,19:49), Sara Rosecrans JR (121,20:45), Hannelore Book SR (128,20:31), Allie Meyers SO (162,21:15), Payton Teel SR, Taylor Armbruster SR, Becky Delaney SR, Abby Frietsh SR.

Outlook – This team could make a return trip back to Peoria this November, Coach Hayley Davis returns five from last year’s 15th place squad. Kendra Gorham and Cassie Karn should challenge for the top spot. The success last year’s team came from their pack running. Last year’s team had a 32 second 1-5 split at state. Their first runner this season should be between 40-50. Elmwood could place in the top 10 this season, the split could be 40 seconds or under. Payton Teel and Taylor Armbruster could help in the top five along with Sara Rosencrans, Allie Meyers, and Hannelore Book.

16 – Macomb

Coach – Randy Ames

2013 Finish – 6th – 1A Elmwood Sectional

Returnees – Brianna Drew JR, Karla Mendoza SR, Ashley Plumb SR, Lydia Fetene JR, Aki Fujiwara JR, Courtney Neavear SO.

Outlook – This team could take the next to Detweiller. Last season, Macomb missed qualifying for the state meet by two points. They will miss the leadership of graduated Kailyn Paisley, but still have five runners that could take their team to the next level. Brianna Drew, Ashley Plumb and Karla Mendoza will give this team a strong first three. The key will be finding runners for the 4/5 spots. A 70-80 split on five could give this team a spot on the starting line at Detweiller in November.

17 – Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central

Coach – Dennis Fraikes

2013 Finish – 13th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Katherine Schneider SO (94,19:44), Molly Prewitt SO, Camren Magee SO, Molly Wang SR, Erica Larson SR, Cheyenne Featherstone JR, Cora Habeger JR.

Newcomers – Kelsey Bowen FR, Taylor Larson FR.

Outlook – All seven runners return from last year’s sectional team. This squad has the talent to make a short trip down Route 29 to Detweiller Park. Katherine Schneider qualified individually as a freshman last year finishing in the top 100. She has the talent to place in the top 50 this year. The one thing to block IVC’s chance for state was because their 1-5 split was over 3 minutes. That could change this year with a season of experience along with the addition of Freshmen Kelsey Bowen and Taylor Larson who could have the potential to help in the top five. “We had a great summer with all of our runners back,” said Dennis Fraikes. “We look to have a great season. If we can stay healthy, this could be the year to get our team to state.”

18 – Knoxville

Coach – Tom Hillier

2013 Finish – 9th – 1A Elmwood Sectional

Returnees – Ryan Block SO (18,18:03), Madyson Johnson SO, Allison Scott SO, Haleigh Johnson SO, Katie Karsen SR.

Outlook – This could be another team that failed to make it to Peoria last season, but could have that chance this season. This team has a strong first three. Ryan Block finished eighteenth at state a year ago. She should be in the top ten in 2014. Sophomores Madyson Johnson and Allison Scott were within 50 seconds of Block at the end of the year. These three could finish in the top 50 by the time state comes around. The 1-5 split projected looks to be big (near three minutes). That needs to come down for this team to finish in the top five at sectionals.

19 – Rock Island Alleman

Coach – Doug Burke

2013 Finish – 11th – 2A Normal West Sectional

Returnees – Kaytlyn Golding SO, Lexie Mallroy SR, Olivia Gonzalez SR, Michaela Hird SR, Lucy Adlfinger SO, Racquel Gonzalez SO, Abbie Ewers JR, Marina Stoll JR, Lupita Tuscano SO, Sydney Ruggles SR.

Outlook – The Pioneers get a big boost by the Girls team being moved down to 1A this season. Alleman returns five from last year’s sectional team. This team has the experience. Three of the top five runners projected to be in the top five are seniors. Kaytlyn Golding, a sophomore, should be the top runner on this team. This team is projected to have a 1-5 split of close to 100 seconds. That will need to come down if this team has hopes of making it to the state meet.

20 – Ottawa Marquette

Coach – Dan Cheatham

2013 Finish – 13th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Paige Aurit JR (58,19:08), Maria Ivanova SR (108,20:01), Olivia Rhodes SR (130,20:32), McKenzie Mattes JR (137,20:40), Katelyn Johnson JR (207, 28:23), Hunter Wright JR.

Outlook – The loss of Dani Aurit to graduation will hurt this team in 2014. Aurit was an all-state runner. Her sister Paige should pick up the leadership role on this squad. A year ago she finished in the top 60. The potential of her finishing in the top 25 is possible. This team is strong through four runners. The key will be finding a freshman that can step in as their fifth runner. A four runner split on Aurit this year should be near 80 seconds. They will need to have their fifth runner within 40 seconds of the four for chances of this team to return to Peoria.

21 – Red Bud

Coach – Bob Ashley

2013 Finish – 6th – 1A Metro-East Lutheran Sectional

Returnees – Deanna Deterding SR (8,17:46), Keri Burmester JR (52,18:59), Lexsis Carner JR, Stephanie Wiechert SO, Brooke Supancic SO, Emma Neumeyer SO, Gracie Wilson SO.

Outlook – This small school in southern Illinois has the potential to make it to Detweiller in November. Last year they fell short finishing sixth at their sectional. This year that outcome could improve. This team has the potential of two all-state runners. Deanna Deterding finished eight a year ago at Detweiller and could finish in the top five in 2014. Keri Burmester finished in the top sixty last year. Chances are good that she could find a place in the top 25. Lexsis Carner leads the 3-7 pack of runners. Last year, there was a three minute gap between runner 2 and runner 3. That needs to change this season if they expect to get a state meet qualification as a team.

22 – Woodstock Marian

Coach – Amy Beattie

2013 Finish – 11th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Abby Jones SO (37, 18:41), Emma Baumert SR, Olivia Dimeen SR, Morgan Litterer SO, Marisa Monbrod SR, Monica Juarez JR, Caitlin O’Callihan SO, Nicole Lange SO.

Newcomers – Shelby Truckenbrod FR, Grace Knudsen FR, Halle Kopp FR, Christina Merrill FR, Violet Ray FR.

Outlook – Amy Beattie steps in as the new coach for this program. Six runners return from last year’s sectional team that could make it to Peoria in 2014. Abby Jones could be the most improved runner in the state this season. She finished 37th at state last year as an individual qualifier. She had a great summer of training according to Beattie. Their returnees could be pushed by a strong group of freshmen led by Shelby Truckenbrod. This team could have a seventy second 1-5 split on Jones. That would be a big plus. “With the new training system at Marian, we are hoping to keep their strength up to prevent injuries,” said Beattie “We want to send more runners to State.  Many of our runners went to cheer on Abigail last year and I think that is pushing them this year.  They don't want to be spectators.”

23 – Herrin

Coach – Dusty Mallow

2013 Finish – 22nd – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Kara Martin JR (29,18:31), Maura Ferrell JR (31,18:31), Brooklyn Schlappi SO (168,21:28), Lexis Weeland (195,22:58), Erin Lerkens SR (201,23:26), Alexis Dickerson SR (202,23:28), Tori Mattingly SR (206,26:53), Jamera Hubbard SO, Amari Gunn SO, Jacylyn Barnett SO.

Outlook – This is a team that should make a repeat trip to Detweiller in November. Coach Dusty Mallow returns all of his runners from last year’s state team. Kara Martin and Maura Ferrell should give this team low point totals in the first two spots. Martin (29th last year) and Ferrell (31st last year) both have the potential to finish in the first 15. The splits on the five and the components of the five need to decrease. The gap between Ferrell and Brooklyn Schlappi was close to three minutes at state. Between 2/3, that needs to be cut in half. The overall split on 3 to 5 needs to stay under 1 minute for this team to have a chance to finish in the first 15 at the state meet.

24 – Litchfield

Coach – Jeremy Palmer

2013 Finish – 7th – 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Returnees – Alexandria Quarton JR, Alexis Throne SO, Brittany Uehling JR, Brianna Traves SO, Robin Randle JR, Hannah Nail SR, Milena Lemminski SR, Jayd Willis SO.

Newcomers – Elizabeth Holan FR, Tatum Werlin FR.

Outlook – This was a team that moved into the top 25 as the season progressed last year. The problem was that they were in the ultra-tough St. Teresa Sectional. Six runners return from that seventh place sectional team that looks to take the next step to Detweiller Park. This team had a good summer of training according to Coach Jeremy Palmer. The strength of their team is the split of the first four runners last season which averaged between 25 and 30 seconds. The key will be moving that pack up in the race. Alexandra Quarton and Alexis Thorne should lead the first four. An under 60 second split could take this team to the state meet. Incoming freshmen Elizabeth Holan and Tatum Werlin could help with that.

25 - Champaign St. Thomas More

Coach – David Behm

2013 Finish – 11th – 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Returnees – Julia Welle JR, Eliza Kramer SO, Sophie Collard SO, Morgan Carmien JR, Cathie Seebauer JR, Nicole Nussell SR, Gina Maggio JR.

Newcomers – Marguerite Hendrickson FR, Morgan Cinnamon FR, Laura Krasa FR, Maris Wszalek FR

Outlook – This could be an interesting year for Coach Dave Behm and his Girls team. “Our girl’s team is very young and talented.  We may have 4 freshmen in the top 7,” said Behm. “That could make our upper classman to step up and take on the challenge to run faster.  It should be a lot of fun.” Julia Welle looks to be the lead runner for this team. She could be challenged for the top spot by Freshman Marguerite Hendrickson or Sophomore Sophie Collard. With the influx of a strong freshman class, this team could surprise some in a tough East-Central Illinois region.

Other teams to watch

(In Alphabetical Order)

Amboy

Coach Bob Hallberg

2013 Finish – 12th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Megan Grady SO (35,18:40), Jennifer Popovich JR, Erin Hosto SO, Sydney Langler SR, Kaitlin Boers JR, Breanna Rieker SO, Emma Scully JR, Renee Vaessen JR.

Outlook – Megan Grady has the potential to place in the top 25 this season. Her improvement could pull Amboy out of a tough Oregon Sectional this season and on to Detweiller Park. Six return from last tear’s team. Their split at sectionals last year on their first five runners was close to five minutes. That needs to come down to finish in the top five at Oregon at the beginning of November.

Des Plaines Willows Academy

Coach – Emily Hinderer

2013 Finish – 23rd – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Stephanie Sommers JR (86,19:37), Anna Sroka SR (158,21:09), Julie Snitzer JR (167,21:27), Teresa Kenny JR (171,21:33), Maura Walsh JR (176,21:47), Maeve Dunaway JR (181,21:56), Marilyn Prince SR, Lauren Yoo SR, Marta Brown SR, Taylor Colgan JR, Sophie Petros SR.

Outlook – This team was a surprise at the Lisle Sectional qualifying for the state meet for their first time. Their top seven returns led by Stephanie Sommers that has the potential to place in the top 50 this season. A strong freshman class could help those efforts as well. “I would love to see the team go back to State for the 2nd time in School history, as well as take 1st in Conference and Regionals - those are the big goals for the season,” said Coach Emily Hinderer. “I believe we have the team to do it!  But ultimately it isn't about a winning record, it is about making strong, healthier athletes who love the sport!”

Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran

Coach – Dave Redden

2013 Finish – 7th – 1A Metro-East Lutheran Sectional

Returnees – Karly Schley JR, Shalyn Edwards SO, Gretchen Engelbrecht SR, Amanda Schock SR, Annie Redden SR, Katelyn Kull SO, Soundra Metcalf SO, Gabrielle Long SO.

Newcomers – Emilee Marcuzzo SR, Brynne Wallace FR.

Outlook – MEL just missed last season qualifying for state finishing seventh at their own sectional. Coach Dave Redden returns his first four from last year’s team. Karly Schley went through a number of injuries last season but still was the team’s first runner. Shaylyn Edwards and Gretchen Engelbrecht should challenge Scherly for the top spot. Freshman Brynne Wallace could be a surprise for this team. “Last year’s team narrowly missed qualifying for state and this year’s team should be substantially better,” said Redden. “As always, we will be a bubble team for state qualifying.”

Harvard

Coach – Brett Willhoit

2013 Finish – 19th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Jordan Peterson JR (34,18:37), Javauneeka Jacobs SR (122,20:16), Taylor Benz SR (157,21:05), Daphene Austin SR (178,21:50), Jazmin Anaya SR (196,23:09), Katie Wright JR.

Outlook – If there was ever a surprise team a year ago, it was this Harvard squad. They return five from last year’s state team. They just missed making the pre-season top 25. We should see them in there soon. Jordan Peterson finished in the top 40 at state a year ago. The junior should move into the top 25 this season. The split needs to be near 150 seconds on Peterson for this team to make a repeat trip. “I expect the girls to continue to learn how to race and compete instead of just run,” said Coach Brett Willhoit. “We are hoping to make some noise at conference, win regionals and make it to state again and improve our overall place.  The girls just have to believe in themselves.”

Kankakee McNamara

Coach – Ken Klipp

2013 Finish – 20th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Elizabeth Stam JR (118,20:09),Hannah Lambert JR (190,22:29), Carolina Quintero SO, Reagan Trevino SO.

Outlook – This could be a tough season for this team. “Girls team is a rebuild at best,” said Coach Ken Klipp. “We lost 6 of our top 7.” The team was scheduled to have six returning from last year’s state team. Cassidy and Jenna Degenoughes moved to North Carolina. They would have been the first two runners. Samantha and Madison Gonski transferred to Bradley Bourbonais. The loss of those four runners hurts the chances of Bishop Mac making it to Detweiller. Elizabeth Stam should be the top runner on this team with the potential of qualifying individually.

Liberty

Coach – Jared Schmidt

2013 Finish – 10th – 1A Elmwood Sectional

Returnees – Katelyn Obert SO, Jacki Graham JR, Megan Barry SO, Blair Genenbacker SO, Brooke Wiewel SR.

Outlook – This team should take another step forward on a chance to make it to Detweiller Park. A year ago, they finished 10th at their sectional. Katelyn Obert leads this small squad (eight runners on the team) with the chances of qualifying this season as an individual. Hopefully, more teammates can run next to her in November. “We have gradually taken steps forward with our teams the last few years and I hope to continue that this season as well,” said Coach Jared Schmidt. “Most importantly, I want this year’s squad to gain as much experience as possible (we are still relatively young) and to get better as a whole throughout the season. We will only lose 1 senior this year, so if we are able to continue making improvements from last year we will be in a great spot to push for a state qualifying spot this year(something our girls team has not done in a long time) and continue to build for the future.”

Monmouth-Roseville

Coach – Sam Marlow

2013 Finish – 14th – 1A Elmwood Sectional

Returnees – Maddie Dulin SR, Griselda Gandarilla SR, Dyesha Taylor JR, Skyler Merry SO, Ezey Bahena JR, Shancah Anderson JR, Alondra Flores SR, Kalie Pringle JR.

Outlook – All seven runners return from last year’s sectional team with hopes of challenging for a state qualifying position. Maddie Dulin and Griselda Gandarilla should push each other for the top spot. Their spli on five runners needs to come down for a chance to extend their season another week. Last year at the sectional meet, it was close to two minutes.

Monticello

Coach – David Remmert

2013 Finish – 9th – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Maggie Utgaard SR (77,19:28), Madison Tutich SR (111,20:02), Audrey Duncan SR (155, 21:03), Abbie Steffes JR (197,23:10), Sophie Remmert JR, Katie Douglas JR, Kate Smith JR.

Newcomers – Taylor Helenthal JR

Outlook – It was an up and down year for the Lady Sages. At one point during the year they were ranked first in 1A. They struggled down the stretch finishing in ninth at state. Senior graduation losses along with the transfer of Sophomore Meggie Schroeder to Edwardsville will give this team some challenges. The talent is there to return to state. Maggie Utgaard and Madison Tutich should lead this team. Both have the potential to finish in the top 35. The key will be having a tight pack. That was their downfall a year ago. Taylor Helenthal is new the team but could contribute immediately. “We have a different team this year that has a mix of veterans and newcomers,” said Coach David Remmert. “It’ll be interesting to see who rises to become the leaders of the squad in voice and by setting the example.  I believe our team will come into the season ready to go and eager to impress.”

Mt. Carmel

Coach – Steve Perry

2013 Finish – 15th – 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Returnees – Makayla Tomblinson SO, Madeline Jones SO, Elise Thomason SR, Jenny Sutton SR, Hannah Martin SR.

Outlook – Even with the graduation of all-everything athlete Tyra Buss, this team still could make some noise in the tough St. Teresa Sectional. They finished 15th a year ago. With five of their top six returning, placing in the top ten at sectionals is a possibility. Sophomores Madeline Jones and Makayla Tomblinson should push for the first spot on this squad.

Palos Heights Chicago Christian

Coach – Jake Christansen

2013 Finish – 11th – 1A Lisle Sectional

Returnees – Jill Van Dyk SO, Breanna Kooiman SR, Cassidy Vandekemp SO, Jessica Brady SR, Maya Cain SR, Sarah Claud JR.

Outlook – This team could be in the hunt for a possible qualifying spot in the Lisle Sectional. They finished 11th a year ago. Breanna Kooiman qualified for state last spring in the 3200. She looks to take that success forward this fall. “We graduated some of our depth last year, which means each girl will need to step up if we are to do well,” said Coach Jake Christensen. “In saying that, I do expect this team to improve a little upon last year's semi-good season (5th at Regionals, 11th at Sectionals).

Rock Falls

Coach – Mark Truesdell

2013 Finish – 10th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Makaley Velazquez JR (63,19:15), Bailie Smith SR, Taylor Ashley SR, Michaela Spreier SR, Azy Cid SR, Mackenzie Schueler JR, Shaylee Stoner SR, Daisy Sosa JR.

Outlook – Four runners return from last year’s team that finished tenth in the Oregon Sectional. Makalay Vasquez qualified individually a year ago. She could finish in the top 30 this season. The 1-5 split is projected to be near three minutes this season. That will need to come down if this team wants to punch a state ticket to Peoria.

Rockford Lutheran

Coach – Jessica Iasparro

2013 Finish – 6th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Michaela Helt SR, Kellie Brassfield JR, Alexa Sakora JR, Michaela Richardson SR, Paige Bradley SR, Kaitlyn Stradtman SR, Grace Pacer SR, Riley Pacer SR, Susan McIntosh JR.

Newcomers – Jonie Linhart FR

Outlook – Jessica Iasparro steps in as the new coach at Lutheran. Her past running experience could be a benefit for this team. She has a good nucleus to work with as five return from last year’s team that finished sixth just missing state. Michaela Helt should step into the leadership role for this team. “I was pleased with the consistency of the captains’ practices, which were organized before the kids knew who would be coaching them,” Iasparro said. “I am encouraged by the great leadership skills on this team and expect to see great improvements through the season.”

Seneca

Coach – Kim Sedlock

2013 Finish – 8th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Sarah Cameron SO, Sarah Virgo SO, Mali Seilheimer SR, Shailee Bauer SR, Lexi Bergren JR, Madi Payne JR, Morgan Armbrust SR.

Outlook – Five runners return from last year’s team that finished eighth in their sectional. Sarah Cameron was their top sectional finisher and looks to be the front runner for this team. According to Kim Sedlock, there is a strong group of freshmen entering that could boost up the team. Their split at the end of the season on five was 93 seconds. If the pack can move up, the Irish could be in Detweiller in November.

Westmont

Coach – Steve Wolf

2013 Finish – 21st – 1A State Meet

Returnees – Annie Carlson JR (90,19:42), Imogene Asa SR (133,20:33), Michelle Launi SO (169, 21:28), Brittany Eierman JR (174, 21:43), Victoria Thomas SR (205, 25:05), Jesse Muncie SO.

Newcomers – Ashley Eiermann FR

Outlook – The Sentinels made a trip to state last year finishing 21st. Veteran Coach Steve Wolf looks for his team to return with five runners back. Sixth runner Katie Muncie chose not to come out. Annie Carlos had a great track season and could use that success to her advantage this fall. She has the potential to finish in the first 40. Freshman Ashley Eirmann could make an impact in the front five. “Training went very well for the girls over the summer, some logging almost 300 miles,” said Wolf. “We would like to take back the Conference title we lost to Seneca last year but we’ll see. We would also like to win our Regional but ACC will be tough. We would also like to finish top three in Sectional and top ten at State.”

Winnebago

Coach – Janet & Joe Erb

2013 Finish – 7th – 1A Oregon Sectional

Returnees – Hannah Insko SO, Emily Walden SR, Cameryn Baldwin SO, Paige Schuur SO, Kelsey Shellhorn JR.

Outlook – Graduation hit this team hard losing front runners Cheyeene Moore and Rachel France. This team still returns five from last season’s seventh place team. Hannah Insko looks to be the lead runner on this team. Freshmen runners will play a key role on the success of this squad. We could see how good this tea is by mid-October. “Having graduated our top two runners, we want to see our freshmen continue to improve so we are at our best come sectionals,” said Coach Janet Erb.”
