Donovan Brazier breaks meet 800 record

State Meet Highlights

There are two Michigan state track meets (MHSAA) – one for the Lower Peninsula (which is almost everybody) and one of the Upper Peninsula (which is a bit isolated and doesn't have a lot of population). At both of these meets there are four classifications based on school size. Donovan Brazier came of age in the 800 meters, distance runners Grant Fisher and Audrey Belf asserted their dominance, and the sprinters from Oak Park and East Kentwood did their thing.

Top Performances:

- Junior Donovan Brazier from Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills broke the state meet record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.24.

- Grand Blanc junior Grant Fisher ran 4:10.82 to win the D1 1600 meters as five guys went under 4:14, and he also won the 3200 in 9:07.11.

- Sekayi Bracey, a sophomore from East Kentwood, was one of the top performers at the D1 championships. She won the long jump (18-7.25), the 100 (11.88) and the 200 (23.98).

- The East Lansing boys ran US#41 3:16.56 to win the D1 4x400 relay.

- The Seaholm girls ran 8:59.08 at the D1 meet in the 4x800 relay, good enough for US#9.

Leading the way on that squad was sensational sophomore Anna Jefferson, who won the 400 in US#9 53.50 and also placed second in the 200 in 24.03. Oak Park didn't use a single senior on any of its three relay wins.

- Mitchell Mueller, a junior from Algonac, jumped 15-9 to win the D2 pole vault.

- Anthony Fitzgerald of Marvindale won the D2 high jump crown with a 6-9 clearance. He also won the long jump with 23-1.

- Junior Austin Sargent of Cedar Spring won the D2 1600 meters in 4:15.85.

- Karrigan Smith, a junior from St. Johns, won the D2 girls 1600 meters in 4:51.53.

- Quincy Collings, a junior from Hopkins, made 6-9 to win the D3 high jump.

- The boys from Sanford Meridian swept 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays in Division 3.

- Senior Michelle Davis of Reading was a big deal in D4, winning the 400 (57.33) and the 100 hurdles (15.05) with new meet records and also placing second in the 300 hurdles in 46.77. She ran a leg on Reading's winning 4x400 relay also.

- Nolen Bright-Mitchell from Concord broke D4 meet records in both the 100 (10.70) and 200 (21.62).

- Miranda Johnson of Ottawa-Whiteford broke D4 meet records in the 200 meters (25.15) and long jump (18-6.50) and also placed second in the 100 meters.

- Luke Anderson of Harbor Beach won a competitive D4 1,600 meters final with 4:17.49 as three guys ran under 4:19.

Top Teams:

The top sprint powers in the state both won a Division 1 team title. A young Oak Park girls squad scored 92 points to dominate the girls team standings, while the East Kentwood boys piled up 71 in their team win.

In Division 2, Remus Chippewa Hills scored 34 points to win the D2 girls title and Zeeland West scored 50 points for the boys title. Frankenmuth's girls scored 96 points to win the D3 team title. Sanford Meridian rode their relay wins to the boys title with 45 points. Reading won the D4 girls title, led by the efforts of sisters Michelle and Jennifer Davis, with 81 points. Concord scored 78 points to win the boys championship.

Top Competition:

There was a great meeting in the middle between 100-meter champion Sekayi Bracey and 400-meter champion Anna Jefferson in the finals of the 200. Bracey, of East Kentwood, crossed the finish line barely ahead of Jefferson, of Oak Park, 23.98 to 24.03. The best part about the matchup is that it could grow into a full-blown rivalry. They are both sophomores.

Record-breaker: Donovan Brazier drove his PRs way down at the end of the season, running 1:50.24 to win the state meet and then 15 days later clocking 1:48.61 for an all-time state best at New Balance Nationals Outdoor championship. The junior from Kenowa Hills has another year to go even faster.
