In New York, it's all about the Benjamins

State Meet Highlights

The New York state championships took place at Cicero-North High School near Syracuse. There are two divisions based on school size and then a championship race that mixes the two together in some events. And there is also a particular-to-New York allotment of events. There is a multi and steeplechase and the boys runs slightly longer distances (3200 vs 3000, 1600 vs 1500) than the girls.

Top Teams:

Medgar Evers (girls) and Warwick Valley (boys) won the Federation team championships.

Top Competition:

One of the best mile matchups in the country featured juniors Luke Gavigan from Tappan Zee and Mikey Brannigan of Northport. It all came down to the lean for Gavigan, who got Brannigan by just .02 seconds. Their times of 4:07.82 and 4:07.84 were US#12 and 13 this year. There were some other near-misses during the season for Brannigan, but he finally got his big title at NBNO in the two-mile. Gavigan also won the Penn Relays mile and the Millrose Games mile (indoors).

Record-breaker: There was a reason why they called him "Big Ben." Benjamin Bonhurst is a big guy who stepped up big when it counted. He threw 67-3 to break the New York state meet record. And speaking of Benjamins, Rai Benjamin also broke a meet record with his 51.86 clocking in the 400-meter hurdles.
