Collins and Williams break 16 at Seaside CA

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

No one expects the void left by Sarah Baxter to be filled overnight, but Destiny Collins of Great Oak and Marissa Williams of Pacific Palisades proved that there is still lots girls distance running buzz in the Golden State with their sub-16 runs on Friday at the Seaside Invitational.

Even if the corners had been trimmed a bit, as suggested by DyeStatCal's Erik Boal in his meet recap, the big victory margins for both girls -- Collins ran 15:58 in the junior race, Williams 15:59 in the senior race -- showed that both are primed for big seasons.

And Great Oak, US#3 in the preseason, demonstrated its enormous depth with 11 girls under 18 minutes on the 3-mile course at San Buenaventura State Beach.

At the Great Cow Run, Samantha Ortega of Saugus won a headlining girls race with 16:30 for 3 miles. Sophomore Claire Graves of Citrus Valley (16:33) was second, followed by Kimberly Coscia of South Torrance (16:56) and Amber Gore of Redondo Union (17:17). Meanwhile, Robert Brandt threw down a great 14:22 to win the boys race.

At the Cal Poly Pomona Invite, junior Austin Tamagno of Brea Olinda got things started with a 14:59.

- On the other coast, US#1 La Salle Academy of Rhode Island opened its season with a 1-10 blitz in the Ray Tracey Race at the Injury Fund Carnival in Burrilville. David Principe Jr., the team's talented sophomore, picked up the win in 15:27.51.

- Up in Alaska, at the Palmer Invitational, which is one of the biggest meets in the state, Allie Ostrander won the girls varsity race by 2 minutes, 12 seconds in 16:40 (5K). Here's what's incredible about that: Ostrander ran 65 seconds faster than her winning time last year. AND, if she had been in the varsity boys race she'd have placed fifth.

- In Virginia, sensational junior Andrew Hunter of Loudoun Valley ran 15:27 at the state meet venue at Great Meadows. The course was different than the one used at the state meet, but the performance in the heat (90) and humidity was impressive. And, it was 34 seconds ahead of where he was a year ago in the same meet.

- In Pennsylvania, at PTXC 6, Marissa Sheva of Pennridge won a showdown with Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley, 18:48 to 18:57. And the fastest boy of the day at The Farm Course in Kutztown was Colin Abert of Easton Area, with 15:21. At the Red, White and Blue Classic Pittsburgh, Madeleine Davison of North Allegheny was impressive with 17:32 and was more than half a minute ahead of the field. Matt McGoey and Hunter Wharrey, also of North Allegheny, were the top boys in the meet with 15:27 and 15:32.

- Montana is shaping up for an historic season, particularly on the girls side of things. Freshman Annie Hill of Glacier ran 17:44 in Helena for three miles at the Carroll College Early Bird Open. She won by 2 minutes and 19 seconds. Meanwhile, at Billings, junior Christina Aragon broke her own course record at Riverfront Park by running 17:09 for three miles. And also, up on the High Line at Cut Bank, Bigfork freshman Bryn Morley kicked off her high school xc career with 17:33 for three miles at the Mike Reynolds Time Trials. Bryn's big sister, Makena, sat out the meet to focus on staying rested a little while longer. At Missoula, Samantha Sayer of Hellgate ran 17:45 at the Montana Coaches' Invite.

- There was a pretty big boys team performance at the Southlake Carroll Invitational in Texas and it came from out of state. Jenks OK went 6-7-8-9-20 in a result that is sure to move them up from US#21. Up front, Carter Blunt of Frisco Independence was the winner in 15:02.8.

- In Utah, Davis rolled to boys and girls team victories at Utah State. Sophomore Aubrey Argyle ran to victory on the 3-mile course in 17:48. On the boys side, Sky View senior Conner Mantz demonstrated his early season fitness with a 14:53.

- In Colorado, at the Cherry Creek Invitational, Fort Collins sophomore Lauren Gregory picked up a victory in 18:23 but it was the host school, Cherry Creek, claiming the team victory while Jordyn Colter sat out.

- In Illinois, it was Graham Brown of Palatine pulling away late to win the Hornet-Red Devil Invitational in Hinsdale in 14:55. And sophomore Alexa Haff of Hinsdale Central ran 16:52 to win the girls race by 11 seconds. The Glenbard West girls put five in the top 15 for the team win and the Hinsdale Central boys confirmed their IL#1 ranking with a 39-54 edge over Neuqua Valley.
