Hannah Long cruises to win at Forest Park MO

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The last time Hannah Long won at Missouri's big Forest Park XC Festival was 2011 when she was a freshman. In the two years since then, Taylor Werner of Ste. Genevieve ran sub-17 on the 5,000-meter course and beat her.

But Saturday, the tables were turned. Long ran 17:07.7 for the victory and Werner finished well back in second place. Werner was second in 17:49.6.

"I was happy with my race," Long said. "My goal was to go sub 17, and I didn't quite get that, but it was a good stepingstone to the season. I felt good and strong. I'm excited for the rest of the season."

Long ran 18:00.3 to win this race as a freshman and then 17:07.0 and 17:37.7 as a sophomore and junior while Werner ran off with it.

The course took some water this week and the track was not as fast as last year due to a couple of muddy spots.

Dorrian Gordon of O'Fallon IL won the boys race in 15:25.1.

- In Spokane, Wash., Tanner Anderson of North Central got his season off to a rousing start with a 14:55 over the 3-mile course at Audubon Park in the Tracy Walters Invitational.

With Spokane rival John Dressel out of action Saturday so that he could take the ACT exam, Anderson ran a 4:47 opening mile and exerted his will after that.

Last year Dressel won this race in 15:00 and the year before that Anderson's teammate, Kai Wilmot, broke the course record with 14:44.

Anderson was pleased to be 38 seconds faster than he was last year in the season opener.

"I feel like I am (in better shape)," Anderson said. "Last year it was a real eye-opener. I didn't do the work I needed to do over the summer and that's what happened to me. This was more of a fruitful race and (it shows) I had a good enough summer."

There was an upset of sorts in the team standings, however, as Mountain View of Idaho scored 125 points to knock off North Central (146) and Kamiakin (157).

- In California, Robert Brandt of Loyola threw down with a course record 14:01.1 for three miles at the Rosemead Invitational. The DyeStatCAL recap is here.

Also, Madera South's boys and Capistrano Valley's girls overcame some oppressive heat to win at Laguna Hills, which should be a confidence-booster heading into Woodbridge next week. DyeStatCAL was all ovet it

- At famed Detweiler Park in Peoria, Ill., Mike Newman of DyeStatIL took in all of the action, including big wins for Jesse Reiser and Alexa Haff. Check here for analysis of all three class races

- In Upstate New York, at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Invitational, the US#1 F-M girls scored 15 points and swept the top nine places. Junior Samantha Levy ran 18:48.7 on the 5K course to lead the Hornets. Meanwhile, the F-M boys swept the top five spots and also scored 15 points. Senior Bryce Millar ran 15:44.5 for the win.

- In Ohio at the Milford Invitational, Annie Heffernan of St. Ursula Academy ran 17:43.8 for 5,000 meters and won the varsity girls race by more than two minutes. With that time, she'd have been ninth in the varsity boys race.

- In Utah, sophomore Aubrey Argyle led the Davis girls to a resounding victory at the BYU Autumn Classic with 33 points. Argyle ran 18:37.5 for three miles and won the girls race by 18 seconds.

Without American Fork in the mix, Davis also captured the boys team title, going 2-3-5-9-10. The individual winner was junior Garek Bielaczy of East (16:06).

- On Friday in Colorado, Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins and Zach Alhamra of Pine Creek logged impressive performances at the Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton.

Gregory, a sophomore, ran 17:15 for 5K and reached the finish line 35 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Maya Browning of Fairview. Jordyn Colter of Cherry Creek was third. Alhamra clocked 14:58 in the boys Division 2 race and won by 26 seconds.

"I had a few different strategies that could have gone down," Gregory said. "But I kind of took off (from the start) because of all the excitement and build-up. It was a better start than usual and I kept that pace. I knew I'd have to keep pushing myself and no settle (for anything less)."

Monarch's girls scored 53 points and were impressive 1-5 averaging 18:18.10. The drop off was significant after five. Cherry Creek was second with 106 points and Fairview was third with 132.

Meanwhile, Albuquerque Academy of New Mexico redeemed itself after being disqualified in 2013 with a 113-point victory in the Division 1 boys race. Monarch was second with 117 and Boulder was third with 130.

- At East Lansing on Friday, Audrey Belf of Seaholm won the MSU Spartan Invitational for the second straight year. And she did so in dominant fashion, winning in 17:32. Perhaps an even bigger story was that her team averaged 18:32 for its five scorers. Belf broke the course record in 2013 with 17:14.

Ben Hill of Royal Oak edged Jesse Hersha of Concord 15:06 to 15:07 to win the boys elite race. The course record of 14:30 belongs to Dathan Ritzenhein (2000).

Waterford Mott, led by third-place finisher Ryan Robinson (15:12), won the boys team title.

In Texas, Connor Meaux of College Park won his season opener at the Oak Ridge Invite (16:08). John Sullivan's recap is here. Meaux is pictured here:
