Grant Fisher wins first race of the season

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

You should know that the Grand Blanc (Michigan) soccer team is 6-2-2 and 5-0-1 in Kensington Lakes Activities Association play.

Which is to say, it's doing fine without Grant Fisher.

Fisher, the 2013 Foot Locker champion, has left a game he loves in order to focus on a pursuit where he is the best in the country. And his cross country season began on Saturday at the Jackson Invitational. He ran 15:22.3 to win his first race by 18 seconds.

In the same meet, Audrey Belf of Seaholm ran 17:27.9 and won the varsity girls race by a full minute.

Next week, Fisher will take a recruiting visit to Stanford on the same weekend as Alex Ostberg and John Dressel. Even though that visit coincides with the Stanford Invitational only Dressel is expecting to take part in the race. Fisher and Ostberg are just visiting.

- Moving on to the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, which is a behemoth of a meet in Southern California, Austin Tamagno of Brea Olinda used a late burst over the final 600 meters to claim victory in 14:05 in the boys race. And Destiny Collins ran 16:03.5 for a convincing victory on the girls side.

DyeStatCAL was on hand. Here is Erik Boal's recap.

At the Mt. Carmel Invitational, which is held at Morley Field in San Diego, Robert Brandt of Loyola won the 3-mile boys event in 15 minutes flat.

Annie Hill- In Montana, at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, all eyes were on a loaded girls race that features four of the top runners in state history -- two of them freshmen.

Makena Morley of Bigfork had won this race three years in a row, but one of those freshmen, Annie Hill of Glacier (Flathead) stepped up and scored a huge upset and ran 16:39.7 for the win over the three-mile course. Hill (photo at right courtesy of Aidan Reed) missed Morley's course record by a few seconds but it was also reportedly running a slow due to to some unmowed grass that is usually cut.

Morley ran 16:48.9 for second and then congratulated Hill on a local news interview in which she called Hill "a stud." Morley's little sister, Bryn, ran 17:04.7 for third and Christina Aragon of Billings Senior was fourth in 17:42.6.

Brody Smith of Cody WY won the boys race in 15:07.4 and Aidan Reed of Helena was second in 15:11.2.

- In Illinois, at the Richard Spring Invitational, a second crowd of athletes tested itself on the state meet course at Detweiler Park. And for the second straight week, top athletes rolled to impressive times. Zach Dale of Conant ran 14:29 for a five-second win. (Last week, Jesse Reiser ran 14:20). And Maryjeane Gilbert of Peoria Notre Dame ran 16:30.2 for a 21-second win. (Last week, Alexa Haff ran 16:41). DyeStatIL recaps of the GIRLS and BOYS races.

- In Missouri, at the Southern Stampede, the best guy in Kanasas raced the top guy in Oklahoma. Stuart McNutt of Blue Valley West KS led Ben Barrett of Norman OK by two strides virtually all the way through the 5,000-meter course.

"Every time we made a sharp turn I'd sneak a peak to see where he was at," said McNutt, who ran 15:04.9 and won by less than second. "Onto that last 200 it was an all-out sprint. I was hoping he didn't have that kick. I knew he ran 4:12 for the full mile and the game plan was to not let him have that kick at the end."

It was perhaps the best boys race of the day in the entire country. Even though Barrett sat on McNutt the whole way, he couldn't get past him.

Meanwhile, Hannah Long of Eureka demonstrated her superb fitness with 16:51.7. She won the girls race by more than 80 seconds.

- In Oregon, at the Northwest Classic in Eugene, Grant junior Ella Donaghu cruised through the Lane Community College course in 18:02. She told Robert Rosenberg of DyeStat that she worked on tacticts -- like surging -- even while she was all alone. Donaghu will face a lot more competition at Stanford next week.

Summit of Bend won both team titles. Matthew Maton, US#2, sat out. He is starting a little bit later this fall in order to peak in December.

- At Sundodger in Seattle, Hannah Bennison from Okanagan (B.C.) won the girls 5K race in 17:19. Behind her, Brenna Peloquin of Gig Harbor was next in 17:42 for one of the fastest early season times in Washington. Her brother, Tristan, won the boys varsity race in 15:00 but the defending NXN champions lost to Kamiakin 36-62.

- In Texas, at the UTSA Romo Classic, Smithson Valley's Devin Clark ran her first 5K race of the season and won it with 17:26. Paige Hofstad from New Braunfels was 10 seconds back. John Sullivan has the meet details here.

- In Indiana, at the FlashRock Invitational, Hinsdale IL sophomore Alexa Haff won the girls race in 17:49.8. She was 14 seconds up on Taylor Nicholson of Avon. Anthony Williams from Bloomington South was the victor on the boys side with 15:24.9.

- At the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in Kentucky, some of the top athletes from Indiana and Ohio crossed the river to compete in one of the best meets of the weekend, one that will have a big impact on the upcoming DyeStat rankings. Ben Veatch from Carmel IN ran 15:08.9 to in win the Midwest boys race. Zack Snider from Brebeuf Jesuit IN was second, four second back. Carmel scored 75 points for the team win.

In the South boys race, Zach Long from Grainger TN edged Adam Barnard from Daniel Boone TN 15:23.5 to 15:23.9. Boone scored 114 points for the team win.

In the Midwest girls race, Annie Heffernan of St. Ursula Academy OH continued to re-assert herself as a national caliber performer and won by 25 seconds in 17:35.9. But it was Carmel IN that dominated the team competition, going 2-3-6-7-14-15 and looking very much like an NXN championship contender.

Freshman Taylor Cuneo of Central Magnet TN won the South girls race in 17:51.9, slightly ahead of Morgan Ilse from Marist GA in 17:55.8. Lake Braddock VA won the team title with 131 points.

- In Florida, at the Mountain Dew Florida Invitational, Alexa Cruz from St. Thomas Aquinas covered the 5,000 meters on the golf course at UF in 17:56.6. The boys race was closer, with Nick Diaz of Sunset needing to dig deep to pulll out victory against Steven Cross from Merritt Island, 15:21.2 to 15:21.4.

- In North Carolina, at the adidas XC Challenge, Philip Hall from South View ran 15:12.1 on the Wake Med course to win the boys championship. Needham Broughton NC won the team title with 84 points. Sophomore Libby Davidson from E.C. Glass VA won the girls race in 17:16.4 for a 31-second victory. Blacksburg VA picked up a big team win with 50 points.

- In Virginia, at the Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg, junior Andrew Hunter of Loudoun Valley continued to make progress as one of the top boys in the country. He ran 15:21 for the win and was 34 seconds up on second place. Newcomer Weini Kelati of Heritage (Leesburg) won the girls A race in 18:12. She is an Eritrean and competed at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, where she was eighth in the 3,000 meters. She reportedly stopped to tie her shoes twice in her U.S. high school debut or would have smashed the course record of 18:04.

- In Pennsylvania, at the PIAA Foundation meet, Madeleine Davidson from North Allegheny was nearly 40 seconds clear at the finish, clocking 18:18 at the Parkview course in Hershey.

Spring-Ford PA's Paul Power broke the meet record by running 15:50 at the "pre-state" meet. Kevin James of Cardinal O'Hara (15:54) and Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East (16:01) also broke the record.

- On Friday, at the Battle of Ocean County Park in New Jersey, the firepower of Christian Brothers (US#2) was on display in a meet arranged by class races. Junior Aaron Groff of Cherry Hill East (15:29.5) and senior Marin Warner of Holmdel (18:10.1) posted the fastest times of the day.

Christian Brothers had three guys at 16 minutes or faster in the senior, junior and sophomore races. But in the sophomore race, CBA had six of the top 10 and all of them ran faster than 16:27.

- In New York, at the Section 10 Pre-state meet, Arlington's Bella Burda picked up a big win over Foot Locker finalist Jessica Lawson, 17:57.5 to 18:13.9 on the state meet course at SUNY Canton. Tyler Italiano of Syosset was the fastest boy, running 15:44.2.

- At the Amherst Invitational in Massachusetts, Benjamin Doiron of Westfield ran 15:48 for the win in the boys race. The Danbury CT boys won the team title with 68 points. Sarah Armstrong (17:57) and Margie Cullen (18:16) went 1-2 for victorious Needham MA.
