Ostrander, Thomet leave lasting impression

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

It's hard to imagine any two athletes leaving a more impactful mark on their state meet than Allie Ostrander and Levi Thomet in Alaska.

On Saturday at Bartlett Trails outside of Anchorage, Ostrander ripped through the 5,000-meter course in 17:06 -- crushing the state meet record, which she shared -- by 43 seconds.

Ostrander might be the best high school distance runner in the U.S. right now but the calendar doesn't work in her favor to prove that at a national meet. Not saying she won't try to, but it's a two-month wait until NXN and Foot Locker West and the cold and snow that come to Kenai, Alaska between now and then aren't easy to deal with.

So let's appreciate this moment. Ostrander won the 4A girls race a minute and 38 seconds. She was faster than all but four of 1-2-3A boys and 50 of the 81 boys in the 4A race.

After she finished, Ostrander waited and then greeted a dozen or so of the next girls behind her.

"The camaraderie of cross country running is awesome," Ostrander told Bob Akamian on the NFHS webcast. "We are racing against each other, but by racing we're also helping each other. We all know what (the) others are going through. I wanted to congratulate them (all) at the end. They are a huge inspiration to me."

Anchorage West won the 4A girls title with 50 points, followed by Soldotna (74) and Kenai (86).

Trevor Dunbar, widely considered the greatest Alaskan XC runner when he graduated from Kodiak, has been visiting home for the past couple of weeks and helped his dad/coach Marcus Dunbar get the team ready for state. Kodiak, led by Thomet up front -- just three seconds shy of Trevor's state course record -- won its first state title since 2008, Trevor's senior year. RESULTS

- On the other side of the continent, at the Great American Cross Country Festival, Andrew Hunter from Loudoun Valley VA ran the third-fastest time in meet history by clocking 14:46.1 on the 5,000-meter course at WakeMed soccer complex in Cary, N.C.

Hunter won by 26 seconds and showed that he might be the best junior in the country.

US#3 La Salle RI, running for the second straight week without Jack Salisbury, eked out the ROC boys team title with 132 points.

Another Virginian, Libby Davidson of EC Glass, won the ROC girls race in 17:07.3. She was 15 seconds up on Ryen Frazier of Ravencroft NC at the end.

Blacksburg VA's girls were vey impressive collectively, scoring 56 points to beat La Salle (105), Green Hope NC (130) and Saratoga Springs NY (143). Results

- On Friday night at the Desert Twilight, Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy CO got a chance to tour the new NXN Southwest course and said she likes it a little bit better than Toka Sticks G.C.

Rainsberger held on to beat top Arizonan Dani Jones, in 16:41.7, and then gave an insightful interview to DyeStatCAL's Erik Boal.

Jones went 16:43 and Bridgette Doucette of Canyon Del Oro ran 16:56.

Carlos Villareal of Rio Rico also gave a strong performance and won the boys sweepstakes race in 14:50. Marcus Wheeler of Corona Del Sol (14:53.4) and Tyler Day of Mesquite (14:59.5) also broke 15 minutes.

Desert Vista's girls beat their Arizona rivals Xavier Prep 51 to 112 in the girls sweepstakes race. Desert Vista also won the boys sweeps with 74 points, beating El Paso Eastwood (104) and Corona Del Sol (186). Results | Videos by Erik Boal
