Red is the color of victory
Janice Davis starts her MVP sprint double
Boys
Central Catholic LA soph Jerald Watson, who runs track when not playing baseball, blazes to finish in his fire engine red uniform. Second was Heritage VA sr Michael Johnson.
Ricky Quintina's notes
Sophomore Jerald Watson was clearly visible with his bright red attire on this cool breezy evening. His hair also had some red tint to it. That should have given an indication of what was to come. He blasted out of the blocks and by 40m had a big lead. He continued to pour it on and separated himself from some outstanding sprinters. So much so, that one knew his time was going to be fast: 10.39 and into a 1.0 mps headwind. .

Paul Cross draws clear of Oakton VA sr Phil Gaeta
Both Virginia runners will run for American University next year
|
Georgia soph Lashun Dix holds off Oakton VA sr Kiera Carlstrom
|
Boys
Ricky Quintana's notes
The 800m field had an ideal number of entrants, 6. Paul Cross was looking forward to this one. He used this meet as trial run for his history making attempt at doubling in the 1600m/800m at the Florida State Champs in May.
In lane 1, Cross was able to seize control on the first curve and raced down the backstretch with Cobb right behind. As they entered the homestretch, Cobb and then Gaeta passed on the outside to hit the 400m in 54. Cross was 55. Patrick was fourth.
With 200m to go, Cobb was battling Gaeta as Cross was cruising some 3m behind. Patrick was beginning to fade and Valure was making gains on the leaders.
As they rounded the final turn, Cross again was in full flight and hammered home the win in a national leading time of 1:51.66. Gaeta ran strong to hold off a late run by Valure.

Stretch runs win both races
Jessica Collins NC exults in come from behind win over Meredith Fuqua AL (7)
Paul Cross (1) catches Anthony Chiulli (6) and Dusty Miller TN (W).
|
|
Boys
Ricky Quintana's notes
The boys race had plenty of entrants, but no clear cut favorite.
Paul Cross (No. 1 on the right above) was making his 4th appearance this season in the 1600m/mile having improved 14 seconds in seven weeks, 26 seconds if you include his 4:12 relay split at the Florida Relays last week. A.J. Wilson had run a 3:56.82 1500m, the second fastest time in the country. Behind them were a host of 4 upper teen milers.
|
At the gun, no one seemed to want to lead and the pack slowed down the backstretch. Baska led, followed by Wilson and Askew through the first lap in a 70.5 (408m) as the pack trailed closely. Askew then took the pace (left) as Wilson followed. |
At 600m, Wilson sling shotted past Askew to a 5m lead and began to up the tempo. Miller followed and Cross responded as they approached the 800m in 2:14. (right)
|
|
Entering the last lap, Miller seized control and tried to steal this one setting out on his own. Chiulli reacted chasing Miller down the backstretch. Cross seemed content some 10m behind as Ciulli and Miller battled it out on the final turn. But as has been the case in his 1600m/mile races, Cross had another gear. He gathered speed around the turn and by 150m he was in full flight.
Cross hit the head of the straight in lane 3 (below left). Chiulli tried to hold him off, but Cross was too much. Cross’ last lap of 59 secured the win in a personal best time.

Girls
Cherc Koenck (3) led through 2 laps but by the start of the 3rd lap Christy Brewer (2) moved in front.
|
Brewer seemed strong at the bell, with Meredith Fuqua (green) up to 2nd and eventual winner Collins (5) still in fifth.
|
Fuqua took the lead on the backstretch but Collins moved up on the far turn (below) and was fastest of all in the stretch.

Scott Fuqua beats the Jakes - Gomez and Raines
|
Boys
Ricky Quintana's notes and John Dye's photos
Scott Fuqua had run under 9:00 for the 3200m at the Nokia meet and won by over 200m. At this race, he would have Jacob Gomez of Oregon, Jake Raines of MS, Fleet Hower of VA and two Floridians, Rolf Steier and Steven Hassen, to keep him company.
Fuqua, Raines, Gomez, and Steier
|
Fuqua was not intimidated and as had been the case in the girl’s race, he took the lead immediately and set a scorching pace.
The pack went with him as they hit the 400m in 64.1. Gomez and Raines were keeping close company running right on Fuqua’s heels. The others followed in their slip stream with Steier leading as the enitre pack was strung out single file by the fast early pace.
The group slowed a bit by 800m which was hit in 2:14.4 (70.2). Fuqua then got back on track as Raines took over 2nd place and Gomez now 3rd. The third lap, 3:22.8(68.5) saw no changes in the first three. Smith, Steier, Hassen and Hower began to lose contact as a 2m lead separated them from the 3 leaders.
As they approached the 1600m, 4:30.6( 67.7), the race would be decided by Fuqua, Raines, and Gomez as their lead increased to 3m over the trailers.
|
One lap more, 5:38.6(68.1) and a 2m gap over Gomez left only Fuqua and Raines to battle it out.
Over the next two laps, 6:46.5(67.8) and 7:55.1(68.7), Fuqua continued his torrid pace with Raines comfortably behind him and not looking to lead. Gomez looked to be struggling, but the lead never grew more than 5m. Steier, Hassen and Hower trailed Gomez by 7m, 2m separating each .
the bell
Fuqua’s pace did not seem to faze Raines as the two entered the last lap together. Fuqua increased the tempo down the backstretch and Raines had no reply and lost some ground to Gomez. Fuqua’s lead looked safe at the head of the straight, but Gomez was now gaining and growing confident with every stride. The finish line came too early for him though as Fuqua held on for the win by less than a second.

Ricky Quintana's notes and John Dye's photos
Laura and Jackie Zeigle of Utah ventured south this year after competing in Arcadia last year. The conditions were perfect as the early afternooon winds and unseasonably cool temperatures greeted the distance runners.
There was no strategy in this race as Laura immediately took the lead followed closely by her sister. When Laura strode through the first 1600m in 5:09.8, it was clear that she was going to run an outstanding time. Eyes focused straight ahead, she continued to hit even splits as her sister followed some 8 seconds behind.

|
Rounding the last lap, both looked strong as they powered down the backstretch passing lapped runners and looking as fresh as when they started. Running solo,Laura’s time slightly bettered her time from last year’s Arcadia meet and Jackie crushed her previous best of 10:47.
