Ausmann improves by more than 2 minutes

Calbi Ausmann's remarkable improvement from one year to the next at the Wyoming state championships on Saturday in Sheridan also landed her in the record book.

RESULTS

Ausmann, a junior from 3A Newcastle, which is located in the northeast corner of the state, ran 18:30 to break the course record and win the state title. A year earlier, on the same courses, she ran 21:09 and placed 15th.

To be fair, the improvement didn't happen overnight. Ausmann had been second in the state as a freshman but still ran over 20 minutes for 5K on the tough Douglas Country Club course. During her sophomore year she discovered that she had an iron deficiency problem and began taking a supplement.

Last spring at the state meet, she won Class 3A titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

But the girls got a lot more competitive across the state in Wyoming this fall. In 2013, only one girl broke 19:15 at the state meet in Sheridan. This year, on the same course, eight girls ran 19:15 or better.

"I do think the girls (in Wyoming) have stepped up their training," Ausmann said. "I know I'm more driven this year."

Ausmann's previous 5K best was 18:55. At the state meet she surprised herself a bit.

"My goal was to win," she said. "I didn't even know the course record. I don't really know what happened. Better health I guess. It definitely felt faster (than 2013). It's nice when you don't have to work as hard."
