Pollard hoping to nail down team title in Iowa

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Thomas Pollard has done a lot of big things in high school running in the state of Iowa, but he's never won a team championship with his Gilbert teammates.

That's become his main focus this week as the Iowa cross country championships approach in Fort Dodge this weekend.

Pollard's teams have finished second, third and second the past three years.

"I wouldn't say we're big favorites," Pollard said. "It's going to be tough, but we have a better shot this year. We're still going to have to run really well and have things go our way."

Gilbert has straddled the line of 2A and 3A the past couple years but the school is now in the 3A classification for all sports.

Pollard, who broke the state record in the 3200 last spring with 8:50.43, says things are going well.
"I feel like I'm in even better shape than I was in track season," Pollard said.

In recent weeks, he has tucked in with teammates and let them a couple of them get a taste of winning.

That won't be the case on Saturday. Pollard, theoretically, has a chance to break the all-time me record of 15:02 -- shared by Ben Anderson (West), 2011, and Jason Thomas (Dowling Catholic), 2012.

Pollard has run the course in 15:20.2. Last year he was the 2A runner-up to Michael Melchert of Monticello, who ran 15:18.2.

"It's on my definitely on my mind, but the No. 1 goals is winning the team title," Pollard said.
