Tanner Anderson makes his choice: Oregon

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Nike Cross Nationals champion Tanner Anderson from Spokane's North Central High School has committed to the University of Oregon.

Anderson said Saturday night that he felt a strong connection to the people he met on his visit to the Oregon campus on the weekend of Jan. 7.

Anderson also considered Wisconsin and Washington and said he went back and forth over where to go.

"One day I'd wake up thinking the U-dub, one day Wisconsin," Anderson said. "But any day I pictured myself lining up I pictured it being with the Oregon guys. In the end it was easy to make the call (to Oregon coach Andy Powell) but hard to tell the other coaches."

Anderson took a recent visit to Wisconsin, where former North Central teammate and 2013 NXN champion Kai Wilmot goes to school. Another North Central connection, Katie Knight, the daughter of coach Jon Knight, goes to Washington.

At Oregon, Anderson will join a program that won the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships and has a storied legacy of distance running -- from Steve Prefontaine to Galen Rupp to Edward Cheserek

And one of his friends, Matthew Maton of Summit High School in Oregon, is also going to Oregon.

"It could have factored in a little bit," Anderson said of his friendship with Maton. "Knowing that we're friends and close to the same level, and we could be good workout partners, there was a little bit of a pull (to go there)."

In addition to the NXN title, Anderson won back-to-back Washington state cross country titles. His victory in November over John Dressel was an epic and produced the fastest time in state history -- 14:32 for 5,000 meters on the Sun Willows Golf Course.
