New Balance Nationals Indoor: The Big Board

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The national indoor championships has begun at The Armory in New York City. Check here for a rolling list of winners, highlights, record-setters and other news and notes.

TFX will be updated throughout the meet on Saturday and Sunday to reflect the ever-changing national rankings. RESULTS

Storylines

Friday: Much of the day is occupied by the non-championship sections of the meet but there are a few big races later in the day. The boys and girls 5,000 meters races feature some prominent athletes, including Foot Locker champion Anna Rohrer and Foot Locker third place finisher Elijah Armstrong. The girls national record in the 5K has been broken here each of the last four years. Also, the distance medley relay championships figure to be highly competitive. The girls high jump is also a championship final.

Note: Hannah DeBalsi of Staples CT has withdrawn from the 5,000 meters because she has a case of bronchitis. Although it may be unlikely, DeBalsi said she is holding out some hope of running the 2-mile on Sunday if she feels better.

Saturday: The action on the straightaways begins in the morning and there is a chance for a national record to go down in the shuttle hurdles relay, where Western Branch's girls are taking aim. A little later, in the boys 4x1 mile relay, La Salle RI may be taking a shot at CBA's record. Ja'Mari Ward IL and Kate Hall ME are the names to watch in the long jump finals. The girls long jump, in particular, is loaded.

Sunday: It's going to be a mad dash to the finish, with five national records already in the books and a lot of action yet to come. A boys mile featuring Grant Fisher has everyone's attention as many expect him to try to drive down close to four minutes. The boys 400 meters is loaded with top tier talent, including defending champion Richard Rose of Brooklyn going against Taylor McLaughlin, Rai Benjamin, Izaiah Brown and Josephus Lyles.Sydney McLaughlin will try to win the 60-meter hurdles and also help Union Catholic in the 4x400. Lauren Rain Williams ran 23.60 in the 200 meters yesterday and may have something big in store for that event.
