A Q&A with Rockdale County GA's Candace Hill

Candace Hill, Rockdale County's super sophomore, returns to the Georgia (GHSA) state championships today at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, Ga.

On the eve of her state meet, Hill answered some questions from DyeStat via email and shed some light on how she has handled her success and what she has lined up in the postseason. Hill enters the Georgia state meet with a perfect 30-0 high school record in the 100 meters, including the 2014 New Balance Nationals Outdoors title.

This year, she tied the all-time Georgia record when she ran 11.30 at the Mobile Meet of Champions. She also has a best this season of 23.35 (nwi) in the 200.

Hill's responses follow each question.

Question #1: Candace, your progress last spring as a freshman was quite stunning. The first entrance we have for you in our database was from a meet called the Parkview Invitational on Feb. 22, 2014. You ran 11.98/24.88 that day. Do you remember that? Did you have any idea that you would improve so much that you might win a national championship?

When I ran at that day at the Parkview Invitational, I never thought that I would win a national championship. I had a feeling that I would improve, but not improve so much that I would be one of the highest ranked sprinters naitonally as a freshman in high school track and field

Question #2: How did you prepare for your sophomore season?

During the beginning of the offseason I took a break from the end of July to the beginning of November. I conditioned extremely hard from November to the beginning of January in order to get my stamina back up to speed.

Question #3: When you've set the bar so high for yourself as a freshman, how much pressure have you felt to top yourself and keep that progression going? And how have you handled that?

After setting the bar really high I felt a lof of pressure because I knew that I had to perform just like I did my freshman year but 10 times better. I knew that I had to reach a certain mark by a certain point or I would be off track and not reach my goals for this season. Running those blazing times my freshman year motivated me to practice even harder and come out running new personal records.

Question 4:. In your current 2015 season you had a HUGE day at the Mobile Meet of Champions in Mobile, Alabama. Can you reflect on that meet and how those great performances happened, especially so early in the season?

At the Mobile Meet of Champions, I actually didn't plan on running that fast, especially not running a PR and the nation's top wind-legal time in the 100 meters. I came there just to win the 100 and the 200 and run seasonal bests in each event. I think the nice weather, the renovated track and my adrenalin contributed to my fast times that day.

Question #5: The state meet is coming up. How much joy do you get out of the state championships in particular and what's your favorite part about it? Are you someone who carries some stress around that meet or are you able to relax and have fun with it?

I got a lot of joy from the state championships my freshman year especially since I ran those fantastic times. I'm actually looking forward to going back and breaking both of my state records. I like the pleasant atmosphere, the healthy competition and I love running against challenging competitors. Being around my teammates helps to keep me relaxed. I feel blessed with a lot of support from all the people that motivate me.

Question #6: The postseason. Last year you didn't go to adidas Dream Mile and maybe a couple of other things that you could have done. But you totally nailed it at New Balance Outdoors and Golden West. What sort of plans have you made for meets after the Ga. state meet? One goal, for instance, might be to make the World Youth team and wear that USA jersey for the first time. Is that on your radar?

After the state meet in Georgia, I do plan on running in a few meets postseason. My plan is to attend the Nike Prefontaine Classic, the Great SW Classic, Brooks PR and hopefully the adidas Dream 100. However, my major goal is trying out for the World Youth trials in Illinois, and proudly representing the USA in Cali, Colombia.

Question #7: How did you feel about Kaylin Whitney turning pro prior to what would have been her junior season of high school? Could you foresee taking a route like that yourself if the opporunity arises?

I feel happy for her turning pro.  She will now run in a field that will push her.  She will have the opportunity to lower her times even more.  If I continue to lower my times then maybe I’ll be on the same route as Kaylin, you just never know.  I feel as though my future is bright and I am looking forward to improving and getting better.
