HS elites react to Grant Fisher's Sub-Four Mile - DyeStatPublished by
Reactions from Grant Fisher's peers around the country after his sub-four mile in St. Louis:
John Dressel, Spokane, Wash. (who famously battled Fisher up the final home stretch at the 2013 Foot Locker Finals):
"I think it's crazy how he ran the exact time that Maton ran a little over a month ago. Even to the 100th of a second."
"I knew that he had it within him. Just like Maton they were banging on that sub 4 barrier. He was in a race with ideal conditions and ideal competition just like Maton. So it's not a surprise to me that we have two guys run sub 4 but at the same time, to have two guys run sub 4 in the same season says a lot about the class of 2015 and just running in general at the high school level today."
Mathew Maton, Bend, Ore. (Sub Four No. 6):
Elijah Armstrong, in Kodiak, Alaska where he'll race a mile against Levi Thomet on Saturday:
"Awesome race! Watching this race definitely gets you motivated to run fast! It's an honor to be in the same class as two guys to run under four in the mile. I'd love to have an opportunity to run in a race like that! Amazing to watch! Both him and Matt make it look so smooth!"
Austin Tamagno, Brea Olinda, Calif., who has the CIF State Finals in the 1,600 on Saturday:
"I'm super proud of (Fisher) and I knew all of his hard work would pay off." (Q: Does it motivate you?) "Of course! I'm loking forward to this weekend and NY the following week."
Alex Ostberg, Darien Ct., who will be teammates with Fisher at Stanford in the fall:
"I’m really happy for Grant and all of his accomplishments. Although I know racing for time is not his style, breaking the four minute barrier puts him amongst the most respected high school distance runners of all times — a position which he is surely worthy of. Watching the race was simply inspiring. I wish Grant the best of luck for the rest of season and am looking forward to representing Stanford alongside him next year."
