Hall shows she ready to go for national title

SACO, MAINE – The whispers started even before her first attempt.

People wanted to know which athlete was Kate Hall

At the long jump pit, tucked at the far end of the stadium Saturday afternoon at Thornton Academy, a large and curious crowd formed around the runway and sand.

People wanted to see Maine’s Hall perform in her last home meet.

And boy, did she deliver.

The  home-schooled senior, who competes for Lake Region High (Naples, Maine), cranked out a 20-foot, 11 inch leap on her first attempt at the New England Track and Field Championships.

The mark, which tied for U.S. No. 1 (if the meet had employed a wind gauge), was greeted by loud cheers and a giant smile from Hall herself.

“I mean, I guess it’s kind hard of hard for me to realize that (the crowd) because at that point I’m in my own little world concentrating on what I need to do and what just happened,” Hall said.

But the long jump was just the start of a long but fulfilling day for Hall.

The senior, who will attend Iowa State this fall on scholarship, added a New England title in the 100 (11.41) and finished second in the 200 (23.69).

“That was my goal to come here and hopefully set some PRs or season bests and it’s just really nice to have some good competition,” Hall said.

Hall, who won the indoor national long jump title last March, will be vying for another crown this coming week at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina.

She’ll be sharing the stage with Courtney Corrin (Harvard Westlake, Calif.) who also has jumped 20-11 this spring. The two duked it out at indoor nationals and Hall expects a similar scenario at outdoors.

“I’m tied for No. 1 in nation I definitely know it’s a realistic goal,” Hall said of a national title. “My competition Courtney is awesome. It’s going to be really fun and interesting.”

Hall, who fouled an attempt that appeared to be well over the 21 foot mark on Saturday, is hoping she can finally capture that feat before her senior season ends.

“It’s a matter of time of when it happens,” Hall said with a smile.

Saturday also saw some other national performances, as Danae Rivers of Wilbur Cross, Conn. ran a U.S. No. 3 time in the 800 meters, beating out Hannah Parker (Coe-Brown, New Hampshire) to win in 2:05.86.

“Around the 100 meters I tried to make a move, go for it, why not,” Rivers said.

Rivers’ time set a Connecticut state record that beat out the previous one of 2:07.19 established in 1992 by Liz Mueller of Waterford.

Hannah DeBalsi of Staples, Conn. easily won the 3,200 meter race in 10:35.03, beating out her nearest competitor by more than 20 seconds.

The junior said she wasn’t pleased with her time, but is eager to get some good competition next week when she’ll run at the Brooks PR in Seattle.

“For Brooks, run fast and not have a bad race,” DeBalsi said of her goal. “I just have not been racing well and I’m just excited to have another crack at it. I know I’m in good shape, so maybe I’ll be able to surprise some people.”

DeBalsi will also run the following week at Junior Nationals in Eugene.

Fellow Brooks PR invitee, Eli Moskowitz of Souhegan, New Hampshire, won the 1,600 (4:15.71).

Up against La Salle’s (Rhode Island) David Principe and Matt Bouthillette, Moskowitz said he was hoping for a faster race, as he wanted the New England record, but was still satisfied.

“I was trying to go for the record, I didn’t get it…but I’m happy to get the win,” he said.

Moskowitz will join DeBalsi down in Seattle on Saturday and compete in the 1 mile event.

“I’m just going to go out and compete,” he said of Brooks.

Also at New England’s South Portland’s Daniel Guiliani capped off a stellar junior year in the throws as he won the shot put (64-02.25) setting a meet and stadium record.
