Lisle, Ill --- Here are highlights of each of the events that were contested at the USATF Hershey Youth National Championships held at the Benedictine University Track Complex from June 30 to July 5.

100 Meter Dash

Girls 17-18 – Kennedy Dennis (Greenville SC) used a great start to pull away at 50 meters for the win. The 3A state champion ran a personal best 11.85 for the win. Taliyah Townsend (Louisville KY) also ran a personal best (12.12) to finish second.

Boys 17-18 – Shandall Thomas (Schaumburg IL) was never challenged as he won the race (10.81) by two tenths of a second ahead of the rest of the pack.

Girls 15-16 – Freshman Ariyonna Augustine (Long Beach CA) got off to a great first 40 meters. It was enough to win the race (12.07) fifteen hundredths ahead of 200 Meter champion Stephanie Davis (Rockville MD).

Boys 15-16 – Anthony Schwartz (Plantation FL) started his Sunday with an easy win in this race. The freshman was an easy winner crossing the line in a seasonal best (10.87).

200 Meter Dash

Girls 17-18 – Taliyah Townsend (Louisville KY) pulled by Kennedy Dennis (Greenville SC) in the final 25 meters to win the championship in a wind aided 24.39. Dennis finished second seventeen hundredths behind Townsend.

Boys 17-18 – Tyler Johnson (Dayton OH) got off to a bad start but rebounded coming off of the curb. He eased by Tajh Gilchrist (Bowie MD) in the final 20 meters to win the race by only five hundredths of a second (21.45 – 21.49).

Girls 15-16 – Stephanie Davis (Rockville MD) maintained her lead that she had coming off the curve and stormed away from her competition for the win. The Maryland 4A state championship in this event ran a personal best 24.13 with a legal tailwind (0.8). Kyara Simmons (Indianapolis IN) ran 24.52 to finish second.

Boys 15-16 – Anthony Schwartz (Plantation FL) repeated the domination he had in his preliminary race. The American Heritage freshman ran 21.86 to win the race by almost half a second ahead of second place Dominic Bentil (Lone Peak UT) who ran the fifth fastest time in Utah this season (22.23).

400 Meter Dash

Girls 17-18 – Julia Hall (Littleton CO) caught up with the runners on the stagger in front of her. She passed Amber Jones (Richton Park IL) on the curve and pulled away for more than a second win ahead of Jones (55.50 – 57.03).

Boys 17-18 – Tyler Johnson (Dayton OH) set a torrid pace early going past the 200 in 22.8. The two time Ohio D2 champion in this event held off a challenge on the final straight by Caleb Ogden (Oak Creek WI) for the win. Johnson finished under 47 seconds (46.80) just ahead of Ogden (47.01). Both athletes achieved personal bests in this race.

Girls 15-16 – Emily Ellis (Lone Peak UT) pulled away in the second half of the race for the win. Only a freshman, the Utah 5A state champion ran 55.83 to win by less than a second ahead of Kylie Welch (Bloomington IL).

Boys 15-16 – Anthony Schwartz (Plantation FL) won his third race of the meet in this event. With prelim time leader Brandon Adams (Minooka IL) a scratch, Schwartz won the event under 50 seconds for the first time in his career (49.60). Johnathan Imes ran 50.08 to finish second.

800 Meter Run

Girls 17-18 – Alyssa Solberg (Tulsa OK) took the pack through the first 400 in a torrid 60.9 seconds. Adrena Mazzei (Tulsa OK) and Karina Liz (Aurora IL). Solberg started to struggle from the fast early pace around 200 meters to go with Mazzei and Liz passing her. Liz was patient as she passed Mazzei in the final 50 meters and held off a final charge by the Oklahoma runner to win the race in 2:11.94. Mazzei finished second running a personal best in the process (2:12.08).

Boys 17-18 – Connor McCue (Aurora IL) stayed off the pace that Eugene Grayson (Glenpool OK) was setting until the final 100 meters of this race. A strong kick down the homestretch gave McCue the win and a personal best (1:53.09). Grayson finished second also with a personal best (1:53.63).

Girls 15-16 – It was a “why not” kind of moment for Rylee Bowen (Santa Rosa CA). Earlier in the week at the USATF World Youth Trials, she established a new California state record when she ran 6:41 to win the 2000 Meter Steeplechase. Since she had to stay in Illinois for team meetings and to watch her sisters run, she jumped into the 800 and won. Bowen took the lead just after the 400 and pulled away from the pack on the back stretch for the win. Bowen’s time of 2:14.45 was five seconds ahead of second place Avryl Johnson (Libertyville IL).

Boys 15-16 – This race was supposed to be all Thomas Mosley (Zion IL) after he had the fastest preliminary time. It was not that way as Liam Belsom (Stevens Point WI) pushed the pace in the lead going through the first 400 in 55.5 seconds. Mosley stayed comfortably in third until the final 200 when he started his kick. Mosley was the only runner under 2 minutes as he won in 1:56.83. Jalen Royal (Fort Wayne IN) edged Belson for second place by one hundredth of a second (2:00.27 – 2:00.28).

1500 Meter Run

Girls 17-18 – Adrena Mazzei (Tulsa OK) concluded her competition with her third win of the meet. Mazzei pulled away from Katie Condon (Lake Forest IL) to win by two seconds (4:39.98 – 4:41.53). Mazzei earlier in the meet had won the 3000 Meter run and also was part of Jenks America Track Club’s win in the 3200 Meter Relay as well as placing second in the 800.

Boys 17-18 – The top two runners in the 800, Connor McCue (Aurora IL) and Eugene Grayson (Glenpool OK), played a big part in this race. McCue had the lead with 100 meters to go when he sensed Daniel Mazzei (Tulsa OK) trying to pass on the inside in the last 20 meters. McCue blocked that move but it was Grayson passed on the outside for the win. Grayson’s time of 3:57.79 was only fifteen hundredths ahead of McCue (3:57.94). Mazzei finished third (3:58.10).

Girls 15-16 – Emily Milburn (Lake Forest IL) completed the 1500/3000 double with a win in this race Sunday morning. Milburn controlled the pace from the gun then slowly pulled away to run 4:47.73 for the win. Breanna Roy (Jamestown TN) was seconds behind in second place.

Boys 15-16 – Thomas Mosley’s (Zion IL) unorthodox pacing paid off with his second win of the meet. None of the pack went with him as he went through the first 400 in a fast 56.6 seconds. He settled down to 71 seconds for each of the next two laps. It gave a chance for the pack, led by Jose Villalobos (El Paso TX), to close to within three seconds of Mosley at the bell lap. The 71’s also gave Mosley a chance to recover from the opening 400. He pulled away to run 4:08.86 and six seconds ahead of second place Cameron Reedy (Dundee IL).

3000 Meter Run

Girls 17-18 – Adrena Mazzei (Tulsa OK) duplicated what her brother Daniel did Thursday in this same distance as she captured the age group championship. She let Caitlin Shepard (Lake Zurich IL) push the pace early in the race taking over into the fourth lap of the race. Mazzei’s time of 10:12.03 was fifteen seconds ahead of second place Ashley Barnes (Bartelsville OK).

Boys 17-18 – Daniel Mazzei (Tulsa OK) pulled away from Jared Borowsky (Lincolnshire IL) in the final 1200 meters to capture the national championships in this age group. Mazzei’s time of 8:37.61 established a new meet record breaking the old record by nearly four seconds. Borowsky finished second (8:43.02).

Girls 15-16 – Emily Milburn (Lake Forest IL) played it cautious in her pacing in the 80 degree temperatures in this race. Just as she did in the 1500, she slowly pulled away from her competition to run 10:42.58 for the win. Michaela Peterson (Kensington MD) ran 10:58.19 to finish second.

Boys 15-16 – Cameron Reedy (Dundee IL) pulled away from Andrew Gandy is the last lap to win the 15/16 age group in a personal best 9:18.97. Reedy was in 8th grade last season and will be a freshman this fall at Jacobs High School in Algonquin.
