Kathleen Funcheon sweeps windy sprints
State Meet Highlights
The Hawaii state championships were held in Wailuku on the island of Maui and got a big shot of wind this year, which produced some fast wind-aided sprints. There are prelims in almost every event, including the 3,000s.
Top Performances:
- Patria Vaimaona of Kailua threw 144-7 to win the girls discus.
- Baldwin had three boys over 14 feet in the pole vault but Aukahi Nolan of Mililani went 14-6 to capture the pole vault title.
- Kamuela Borden of Iolani threw 57-3.75 to win the boys shot put.
- Kayson Smith-Bejgrowicz of Kamehameha Kapalama was busy. He won the triple jump with 46-1.50, won the high jump with 6-6 and was second in the long jump with 22-5.75.
- Mehana Sabado-Halpern of Hilo won the triple jump with 37-6 (4.5w).
- Emma Taylor of Hawaii Prep ran 14.63 to win the 100 hurdles with a 6.5 tailwind. She also won the 300 hurdles in 44.26. She swept the events for the second straight year.
- Kathleen Funcheon of Moanalua won the 100 meters in 12.11 (3.7w) and the 200 in 24.51 (4.4w).
- Bailey Kaopuiki of Baldiwn won the 100 meter dash in 10.74 (5.6w) and the 200 in 21.68 (3.4w).
- Louis Ondo of Waiakea edged out Kaeo Kruse of Kamehameha Kapalama in the 1,500 meters, 4:04.01 to 4:04.18. Kruse won the 3,000 in 9:04.83.
- The Kamehameha Kapalama men and Kaiser girls won team titles in dominating fashion.
