Big jumps, fast sprints in South Carolina

 

State Meet Highlights

 

- DJ Ledell of River Bluff, a sophomore, had one of the best moments of the 4A championships when he jumped US#8 49-8.50 to win the triple jump.

 

- Junior Tavien Feaster of Spartansburg a Clemson football recruit, had a great 4A meet in the sprints. He won the 100 in US#12 10.42 and the 200 in 21.11 (nwi). He could be one of the top sprinters in the country next year.

 
- James Island duo Hailey Sweatman and Makyla Stanley were dominant in 4A field events. Sweatman broke the meet record in the pole vault with a 12-8 clearance. Stanley won the long jump (19-8.50) and triple jump (38-11).

 

- Rebekah Smith, a junior from Dutch Fork, won the 4A 100 meters in 11.88.

 

- Desmond Anderson (also a star running back) from Broome flew 25-4 in the 3A long jump to set a new state meet record (nwi).

 

- Michael Dickson of Beaufort won the 3A 110 hurdles in 13.92, placed fifth in the 100 (10.91), placed second in the 200 (21.75), and was on the winning 4x400 relay (3:17.70).  

 

- Samuel Denmark of Hanahan, a junior, won the 3A 100 (10.65) and 200 (21.58). Hanahan won the boys team title with 97 points.

 

Laurie Barton, a junior at Daniel, ran 55.59 to win the 3A 400 meters and 2:18.51 to win the 800 meters.

 
- Kennedy Dennis of Berea, a sophomore, captured the 3A 100 meters (11.85), the 200 meters (24.52) and was second in the 400 (56.04).

 
JJ Sherman of Waccamaw had a stellar 2A meet, winning the long jump with 24-1, winning the 100 (10.75), taking third in the 200 (22.01) and taking second in the 400 (48.03).

 
- Junior Malik Grate of Pendleton ran 47.77 to win the 2A 400 meters, won the 200 in 21.55, placed second in the 100 with 10.84, and was third in the long jump with 23-3. Teammate Brad Johnson won the triple jump with 48-1.

 
Quamecha Morrison of Battery Creek won the 2A 100 (12.06), 100 hurdles (14.67), 200 (24.99) and high jump (5-2).


- Sophomore Tevin Richardson of Calhoun Falls won the 1A 200 (21.78) and 400 (48.31) titles, sprints titles with 10.67 and rom Broome popped a big 24-0.50 wind-legal long jump in the 3A meet, good for US#11.



Top Teams:


JL Mann continued to reign as the girls 4A champions with 78 points. Wando won the boys 4A title with 65.50.


 

Top Competition: One of the best races of the meet came in the 4A girls 400 meters final, where Arlicia Bush from Ridge View ran 54.42 to nose out Riley Egbula of Hillcrest by .02 seconds. Bush and Egbula went 1-2 in the 400 in 2014 as well. Egbula, though, won the 200 (24.41) while Bush was third (24.50). They also locked up in the 4x400, with Ridge View taking the win in 3:48.81. Egbula also helped Hillcrest win the 4x100 in 47.60.
