Issaquah girls, South Kitsap boys rule 4A

 

State Meet Highlights

 
The WIAA championships are held in two locations. The largest three classifications (4A/3A/2A) meet at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The smallest (1A/1B/2B) gather at Eastern Washington in Cheney.

 

Top Performances:

 
- In Class 4A, Anna Rodgers of Lewis & Clark made a big splash in her freshman year. She won the 100 meters in 12.13 seconds. She was third in the 200 meters, second in the long jump, and she ran on the winning 4x200 relay team.

 

- Senior Phillip Moore of Eastmont swept the Class 4A boys sprints, with times of 10.80 and 21.78 – both against slight head winds. He was also on the winning 4x400 relay.

 

- Jack Yearian of Bellarmine Prep stepped to the forefront of a deep distance state with victories in the Class 4A 1,600 (4:12.14) and 3,200 meters (8:59.94).

 

- Dai’lyn Merriwether of Union won the Class 4A 200 meters in 24.87 and her twin sister Jai’lyn Merriwether won the 400 meters in 54.73.

 

- Brandi Hughes of Skyline, a junior, won the Class 4A 100 hurdles in 14.10nwi and placed third in the 300 hurdles with 44.27.

 

- Darhian Mills of Inglemoor, a senior, ran a meet record 42.13 to win the Class 4A girls 300 hurdles (and 42.06 in the prelims) and also placed second in the 100 hurdles with 14.13 seconds (nwi).


- KC Moulden of Enumclaw threw 45-5 in the shot put to win the Class 3A title. She was also second in the discus.


- Madison Yerigan of Stanwood jumped 5-8 to win the Class 3A girls high jump.


- Junior Chinne Okoronkwo of Mountlake Terrace won the 3A girls pole vault with 13-3, defeating state record holder Laura Marty of Blanchet Catholic in the process, and also won the triple jump (41-10.25) and the long jump (18-0).

 

- Sophomore Jordan Oakes of Holy Names had a big Class 3A meet, winning the 1,600 meters in 4:47.11 and the 3,200 meters in 10:34.51. Teammate Erin Ripple won the 800 meters in 2:10.45 and was second in the 1,600 with 4:54.45.


- Jordyn Edwards of Lynnwood, a junior, won the 3A girls 400 meters in 55.34.

 

- Dejon Devroe of Oak Harbor won the Class 3A 800 meters with 1:52.61.

 

- Tyson Penn, a junior at Bellevue, won the Class 3A high jump (6-8) and triple jump (47-4.25).

 

- John Dressel of Mt. Spokane was a double winner in the Class 3A 1,600 (4:15.26) and the 3,200 meters (9:00.32). Longtime rival Tanner Anderson, the NXN champion from North Central, was second in the 3,200.

 

- Scott Kopczynski of East Valley won the Class 2A 1,600 in 4:12.36 and the 3,200 in 9:08.64. His teammate Chad Stevens was second in both events.

 

- Isaac Westlund of Archbishop Murphy ran 47.84 to win the 400 meters in the Class 2A meet.

 

- Keshun McGee from Olympic put together a strong horizontal jumps combo, winning Class 2A in the long jump (23-4.50) and the triple jump (47-7.75).


- Joey Weiler of R.A. Long won the Class 2A pole vault title with 15-9. His twin sister Abby placed second in the girls pole vault with 12-6.


- Peyton Russell from Tumwater jumped US#12 40-8 to win the Class 2A girls triple jump. She was second to Wurrie Njadoe in the long jump.


- Kirsten Webber of Squalicum jumped 13-3 to win the Class 2A pole vault.  


- Wurrie Njadoe of Shorecrest, a junior, helped her team win the Class 2A state title with victories in the 100 meters (12.06), 200 (25.00), high jump and long jump.


- Dejuan Frye of River Ridge helped his team to the Class 2A state title with a victory in the 200 (21.75), second in the 400 and fifth in the 100. He also led the 4x100 relay to a state-leading 41.65 clocking.

 

- Jonathan Magee of Bear Creek won the Class 1A triple jump with state-best 47-10. He also won the long jump with 22-4.50.

 

- Sophomore Jordan Spradlin of Montesano won the Class 1A shot put (42-7.75) and discus (146-10) titles.

 

- Hannah Rusnak, a sophomore from Lynden Christian, jumped 18-8.25 to win the Class 1A long jump. She also won the 100 hurdles (14.71). She was also third in the 100 meters and helped her team break the meet record in the 4x100 relay.


- Senior Regyn Gaffney of Adna was all over the Class 2B state meet, collecting titles in the 100, the 200, the 400 (57.01). Tracy Melville, however, led Lind-Ritzville to the girls team title with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200.



Top Teams:


The Issaquah girls – including a meet record-setting 3:48.95 in the 4x400 relay -- and South Kitsap boys were the strongest team in the Class 4A championships. However, the Kamiakin girls scored 92 points in the 3A state meet. Bellevue won the 3A boys state title.

 

Top Competition: The girls triple jump has been taking off in Washington. Chinne Okoronkwo of Mountlake Terrace broke the Class 3A record. And in Class 4A a pair of freshmen from Curtis staged a top-notch competition. Saudia James-Heard of jumped 39-11.75 for the win and needed her final attempt to overcome teammate Alexis Ellis (39-9.75) by a margin of two inches.
