Armstrong concludes illustrious Idaho career

 

Top Performances:

 
Elijah Armstrong, senior from Pocatello, leaves as one of the most decorated track athletes in state history. Between cross country and track he won 13 state titles. In 2015, he tripled for the second straight year at the Class 4A meet – winning the 800 meters (1:56.82), the 1,600 (4:13.06) and the 3,200 (9:13.29).

 
Kolbi Sims, a senior from Eagle, won the Class 5A long jump (18-7.75), she was third in the high jump with 5-4 and third in the 200 meters (25.38).

 

- Emily Hamlin led Boise to the Class 5A girls title with victories in the 3,200 meters (10:49.39), the 1,600 (4:59.50) and the 800 (2:15.03) – sweeping the events for the second straight year.

 

- Michael Slagowski, a junior from Rocky Mountain, won the Class 5A 3,200 (9:20.90), the 1,600 (4:16.76) and the 800 (1:53.44).

 

- Brooklyn Daylong from Vallivue threw 152-2 to win the Class 5A girls discus.

 
Josh Barclay of 4A Minico completed a throws double for the second straight year, winning the Class 4A shot (61-1) and discus (169-5). He broke the all-time state record in the shot in 2014.

 

- Keanne Alston from Rigby won the Class 4A girls 100-200 sprint double and also anchored her team to the 4x100 title.

 

- Mikaela Sawyer from Bishop Kelly swept the hurdles races and finished second in the 100 meters to lead her team to the Class 4A girls team championship.

 

- Saidee Jones from Caldwell threw Idaho-best 42-11.50 to win the Class 4A shot put.

 
Chase Armstrong from Emmett, a junior, won the Class 3A 110 hurdles in 14.35 (4.1w) and also the 400 meters (49.87) and the 300 hurdles (40.10). Freshman teammate DJ Crump won the 100 and 200 but Emmett still got edged for the team title by Sugar-Salem, 97.50 to 96.50. Emmett’s girls, however, did win.

 
Kaleala Bass from Grangeville, a senior, won the Class 2A girls 800 meters (2:17.04), the 400 (58.34) and the 200 (26.67). She led her team to the state title. Over the summer she signed with Idaho with the intention of becoming a heptathlete.

 


Paul Ryan of Logos was a dominant athlete in the Class 1A meet, setting meet records in the 800 (1:55.64) and 3,200 (9:25.02) and also winning the 1,600 (4:24.39) and the 400 (50.58). Logos swept the 1A team titles and the boys picked up 31 points in the 1,600 alone with 1-2-3-4-7 placers. Ryan went on to win the Brooks PR mile and finish US#8 and Idaho record holder (4:06.21).



Top Teams:


Capital’s boys ended Rocky Mountain’s four-year run as Class 5A boys state champions, scoring 96 points to runner-up Centennial’s 71. Junior Sam Brixey led the charge with victories in the 110 hurdles (14.18), the 300 hurdles (38.53) and second in the triple jump. Boise, led by by the combo of Madison Lung and Emily Hamlin, unseated Mountain View as the 5A girls champion.


In Class 4A, Bishop Kelly’s girls returned to the winner circle with a big boost from Princeton-bound Mikaela Sawyer. Rigby won the boys title.



Top Competition: For the second year in a row, it was a battle of Madison vs. Maddison in the Class 5A girls 200 that drew together the victors of the 100 (Maddison Ward of Lake City, 12.20) and the 400 (Madison Lung of Boise, 55.87). Unlike 2014, this time Lung pulled out the 200 with 24.62 to Ward’s 25.18 (2.9w).
