Five Questions: Ben Veatch

By Parker West for DyeStat

Ben Veatch of Carmel IN, preseason US#4 and one of the top returners from both NXN and Foot Locker, is on pace to become one of the best runners ever from Indiana. He's the reigning state champion in both cross country and the 3,200 meters on the track (where he is No. 7 all-time in Indiana behind the likes of Futsum Zeinasellassie and Rudy Chapa).

Here are five questions for Ben Veatch:

Question 1 – Carmel is known for its Cross Country supremacy. What’s it like to be part of such a program?

Ben Veatch: There is definitely a history of success here at Carmel. We go into every season believing we have a chance to win state. We have a great group of guys and what are, in my opinion, some of the best coaches. Our guys are always willing to work for each other and it’s a great atmosphere to be in.

Question 2 – You made an interesting decision to go to your team’s camp rather than Nike Elite Camp. What factored into that decision and how did your summer training schedule go?

Ben Veatch: Well I love my teammates. We feel like we have a chance to win not only state but to compete for a podium spot at nationals. I wouldn’t miss the chance to bond with my teammates. As for summer training, it’s been going well. I’ve ran workouts in times that match my fitness level at the end of last XC year so I know I’m in really good shape. I’m just looking forward to racing.

Question 3 – You seem to be an overwhelming favorite to win back to back state championships in XC. With all of this attention, how do you keep yourself focused?

Ben Veatch: I don’t really think about the individual aspect. Of course I have goals for myself, but I just try and do the best I can for my team. The best way to do that is to score 1 point. If I run for my teammates and continue my training I’m sure I will run my best.

Question 4 – What are your individual goals this season?

Ben Veatch: Well with the training I have and my results from last year I think I can win any race I step on the line for.

Question 5Futsum Zeinasellassie is a running legend in the state of Indiana, and you were only six seconds behind his 3,200-meter state record this past spring. Did you ever think you would be in that kind of territory?

Ben Veatch: Honestly not until last year. I just listened to my coach and followed the training and the results just came later. I now think I could target his records.
