Roberts wins St. Vrain showdown with Butler

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Paul Roberts of Lyons CO squared off with one of his top rivals in Colorado on Saturday at the St. Vrain Invitational.

Roberts and Skyview’s Ben Butler are probably the top two guys in Colorado and their race in the Class 2A/3A race on Roberts’ home course helped to illustrate that. Roberts, No. 7 in the DyeStat preseason rankings, covered the 5,000 meters in 15:18 – just three seconds shy of the course record that he shares with Cerake Geberkidane. Butler finished in 15:29. They were both more than 20 seconds faster than anyone in the meet.

“(Butler) is a kid I respect I I know that’s fast,” Roberts said. “I went in to the race with confidence but also knowing that he could beat me if he was having a good day. I needed some good competition.”

Butler pushed out to an early 8-10 meter lead but Roberts used a downhill to close down that gap and shoot past to take the lead.

“At two miles we were together but then I made a move without about a K to go,” Roberts said.

Meanwhile, in the girls race, Mountain Vista’s Allie Chipman broke the course record for girls with 17:55. She won the 4A/5A race by 48 seconds.

On Friday at the huge Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton, Isaac Green of Monarch edged Jordan Lesansee of Albuquerque Academy NM as both were timed in 15:16. They were both 19 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Steven Goldy from Arapahoe. In the team race, Arapahoe got the win, however, beating Fort Collins by four points, 102 to 106.

Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins ran 17:39 to win the Division 1 girls race. Megan Mooney of Horizon and Holly Bent of Monarch also broke 18 minutes.

Cherry Creek won the team title with 106 points.

In Washington, at the Tracy Walters Invitational, North Central got the season off to a fair start with victories over fellow regional powers Kamiakin and Jesuit.

North Central’s Justin Janke took off after a slow first mile and covered the 5,000-meter course at Audubon Park in 15:51. Jesuit’s super soph Josh Schumacher was second in 16:06.

“I have to admit I was a little nervous,” Janke said. “I know that Schumacher is talented and I wasn’t sure how much better he improved over the summer.”

However, once Janke surged away from the pack he never saw anyone else again.

In South Dakota and the Nike Pre-Heartland meet, the upstart Minnetonka girls beat US#11 Willmar 47-59 at Sioux Falls on the Yankton Trails course.

However, Willmar was running without its No. 1 and 3 runners from last year’s NXN squad.

Minnetonka freshman Sophie Whicher ran 17:53 for an impressive 43-second win.

Willmar did win the boys title, led by Nadir Yusuf’s 15:59 win.

In New Jersey, Drake Anzano of No. 1 CBA outkicked St. Benedict’s new import Ronald Kigen at Roxbury, 15:49.27 to 15:50.43. Kigen is a freshman and follows in the footsteps of Edward Cheserek and Edwin Rutto making the trek to St. Benedict’s from Kenya.

Blaise Ferro sat out for CBA; Rutto did not run for St. Benedict’s.

In Illinois, Judy Pendergast of Naperville North ran the fourth-fastest time ever at Detweiler Park with 16:18.9 to blow everyone out of the water at the First to the Finish Invitational in Peoria. Unfortunately, many of her teammates got caught up in traffic by the first turn and weren't able to overcome it. The Yorkville girls stepped up to win the team title and beat a field of teams that includes US#2 Naperville North.  Kevin Salvano ran 14:22 to win the top boys race. Check out DyeStatIL for more a complete recap.

At Lake Park in Medinah, Lindsey Payne of Glenbard West turned in another strong performance with 16:28.4 on a 3-mile course. Senior Keagan Smith of Huntley ran 15:04.2 for the fastest time of the day.

In Missouri, at the Forest Park XC Festival, senior Taylor Werner from Ste. Genevieve regained the title that she won as a freshman and sophomore by running 17:38.8. Ben Naeger, also of Ste. Genevieve, was the fastest boy of the day, running 15:25.5. Lafayette won the boys and girls Green division team titles.

In Oregon, at the Ash Creek Invitational in Monmouth, Olivia Brooks of Summit ran 17:59.27 for 5,000 meters and led her team to a four-point win over Camas, the top-ranked team in the Northwest. Jackson Mestler of Sheldon won the boys race with 15:22.79.

In Indiana, at the Ben Davis Invitational, junior Taylor Nicholson of Avon ripped through 5,000 meters in 17:38.1 and beat a loaded field of girls that felt a lot like a state meet preview. Lauren Johnson of West Lafayette was second in 17:41. Pendleton Heights scored 75 points to win the team title.

Hari Sathyamurthy of Brownsburg, the state’s 800 meters champion, won the boys race in 15:43.4. Avon collected the team championship.

Also, Julien Magallanes ran a state-leading time of 15:14.19 at the Brown County Eagle Invitational.

In Pennsylvania, Elmira NY’s Abbey Wheeler put down one of the most impressive performances of the weekend with a 2-minute victory in 17:22 at the Mountaineer Flatlander Invitational in Mansfield, Pa.

Also, at the PTXC, Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley won the girls gold division race in 18:23.21 for a four-second win over sophomore Brooke Hutton of Coatesville. Dominic Hockenbury of Lake Lehman won the top boys race in 15:53.

At the Red, White and Blue Classic in Pittsburgh, Nick Wolk from Peters Township (15:48.4) and Lauren Finikiotis of Oakland Catholic (18:21.4) ran the fastest times of the day.

At the Tiffin XC Carnival in Ohio, Dominique Clairmonte of Lexington OH ran the fastest 5K of the season so far for girls in the Buckeye State, with 17:59.81 at Hedges Boyer Park. The top finisher on the boys side was Tristan Dahmen of Maplewood, who ran 15:28.38.

In New York at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Invitational, we got an early glimpse of Fayetteville-Manlius' new lineup and there were a few new names. Kaitlyn Neal, a senior transfer, led the defending naitonal championship girls team with a victory in race 2 with 18:44.2. And freshman Claire Walters made a splash with her fourth-place finish (No. 3 for F-M). On the boys side, the F-M boys went 1-4 and were led by senior Bryan Geehrer, who won his race in 16:19.5.

Ben Petrella of Liverpool, however, was the standout  performer of the meet with a time of 15:58..2 in race 1 that was 52 seconds up on the second place finisher.

In Utah, at the Murray Invitational, Garek Bielaczyc of East continued his hot early season running by clocking 15:04.6 for 5,000 meters. He beat Alek Parsons of Ogden by an impressive 42 seconds.
