Junior Nationals coming to Clovis

For the first time since 2005, the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held in California, the USATF released Wednesday.

Buchanan High School’s Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, venue for the past seven CIF State Championships, will be the host site for the June 24-26 event, which features the nation’s elite athletes ages 14-19.

The meet will be held to determine the U.S. roster to compete July 19-24 at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia.

The Clovis Unified School District has been named the local organizing committee, led by deputy superintendent Carlo Prandini, father of former Clovis High and University of Oregon star Jenna Prandini, who recently signed a professional contract with PUMA.

In non-Olympic years, the Junior Nationals are traditionally held in conjunction with the U.S. Outdoor Championships. Both events were contested at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, in 2013 and at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., the past two years.

However, with the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials scheduled for July 1-10 at Hayward Field, the Junior Nationals will be held at a separate location for the first time since 2012.

The last time Junior Nationals were held in California, Home Depot Center in Carson was the host venue. The event was also held in Palo Alto in 2002-03.

Ten California-based athletes were on the U.S. roster that participated July 15-19 at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, including women's long jump gold medalist Tara Davis of Agoura, women's 200-meter silver medalist Lauren Rain Williams of Oaks Christian and men's high jump bronze medalist Darius Carbin of Mt. Pleasant.

They will all be eligible to compete at the Junior Nationals in their home state.

Veterans Memorial Stadium is also scheduled to host the 2016 Mountain West Conference Championships from May 11-14, the CIF Central Section Championships on May 21 and the state meet for the eighth year in a row June 3-4.
