Five Questions: Maegan Doody

Maegan Doody of Oyster River HS has become not only one of the top runners in her home state of New Hampshire, but in all of New England. And last weekend's win at the Manchester Invitational pointed to the arrival of an even higher level. She ran broke a course record held by Vermont legend Erin Sullivan that stood for 27 years.

We caught up to her this week to ask her five questions.

Question 1 -- Last Saturday was a pretty special day for you, not only winning the Manchester Invitational in 17:41, but breaking the Invitational course record (17:42) set in 1998 by Erin Sullivan of  Vermont. How did the race play out for you?

Maegan Doody: It wasn't soon after the race started that the lead pack strung out and set a sustainable pace. The first mile felt smooth and comfortable, which well prepared me for the challenging middle mile of the course. I used the hills to separate myself from the rest of the field. The pack got smaller and smaller during the second mile and once I hit mile three, I realized I had a shot at the record. During the long downhill before the last mile, I was able to catch my breath and relax, which allowed me to pick up the pace for the end of the race. I felt strong and in control and seeing my time, well under my personal record on the course and overall, as I approached the finish line was an unforgettable feeling.

Question 2 --  Erin Sullivan has a lot of history, two-time Foot Locker champ, quite the college career. For you to break her record, what does that mean to you?

Maegan Doody: Breaking Erin Sullivan's record is an honor. Manchester is such an established and historical meet in New Hampshire and many talented runners have raced on the course. Setting the New Hampshire record was one of my distant goals for this season, but to break the Manchester Invitational record at the same time was something I didn't expect. Saturday being my 8th race on the course made it all the more special and I'm super excited to see what I can do this season.

Question 3 -- This was only your second race of the season and you appeared very, very strong. What was this summer training like for you and did you do any camps?

Maegan Doody: I upped my mileage to build a stronger base after seeing success with that during the outdoor season. I didn't do any running camps this summer, but I was really able to focus on how I felt and determine what was working and what wasn't working for me. At this point, I am still running higher mileage and doing intervals and hill workouts each week and I'm feeling very strong!

Question 4 -- You've made a name for yourself in the northeast but after a race like this to kick-start your season, do you feel like more of a national contender now?

Maegan Doody: My goals have changed compared to previous seasons and if I qualify for nationals this year, I want to be there to compete instead of just for the experience. There is still a lot of time for me to improve between now and the end of the season and as long as I stay healthy and continue to build strength, I think I can compete with some of the top girls.

Question 5 -- You raced at NXN last year, do you want to repeat and try and better your placement or do you give Foot Locker a try in your senior year?

Maegan Doody: I haven't yet decided between NXN and Foot Locker, but regardless of my decision, I'm going to try to better my placement and compete for a top spot.
