Alaska recap Kenai, West Anchorage tops in Class 4A
The graduation of Allie Ostrander did not gut the Kenai Central girls cross country team. Perhaps inspired by her success, Kenai followed in the wake of the reigning NXN champion and won the school's first-ever Alaska Class 4A championship in cross country.
Kenai put four runners in the top 11, led by runner-up Riana Boonstra.
Molly Gellert of West Anchorage ran 18:58 on the mucky course at Bartlett Trails, where overnight snow melted to create a wet, muddy track.
West Anchorage won the boys. Ty Jordan of Chugiak was the fastest runner of the day, running 15:48. He was four seconds ahead of runner-up Gus Schumacher of Service.
In the Class 3A/2A/1A girls meet, Briahna Gerlach of Glennallen repeated her individual title with a 34-second victory in 19:04. Gerlach, a junior, is now a three-time small school cross country champion.
Homer won the team title.
In the boys meet, Sitka won the team championship with its top four all finishing in the top 15. Kaleb Korta of Galena ran 16:00 and won the race by 10 seconds. More news |
