All-time records tumble in AA meet

 

State Meet Highlights

 

The Minnesota (MSHSL) state championships are held at Hamline University and are comprised of A (small) and AA (large) classifications. Of note in Minnesota, nine places score in the finals and first place is worth 12 points.  

 

Top Performances:

 

- Ruby Stauber, a junior from Wayzata, had a huge breakthrough in the 800 meters where she ran 2:06.50 in the finals to smash the all-time state record.

 

- Joe Klecker of Hopkins was one of the stars of the show. He put his best efforts together at the state meet and won the Class AA 1,600 meters in 4:06.54 for a new state meet record. Three others -- Justin Hyytinen (4:12.17), Connor Olson (4:12.84) and Jaret Carpenter (4:14.40) -- broke 4:15. Klecker also won the 3,200 meters in 8:57.76 and missed Obsa Ali's record by less than a second.

 

- Bethany Hasz of Alexandria, a junior, swept the Class AA 1,600 (4:47.57) and the 3,200 (10:26.40) while her twin sister Megan was forced to sit out and miss the meet with an injury.

 

- Jedah Caldwell of Chanhassen ran 12.16 into a stiff -3.7 headwind to win the Class AA 100 meters. The junior also won the 200 meters with 24.69 into a -1.8 wind.

 

- Sam Zenner of Eagan, a football standout, won the Class AA 100 meters with 10.84 into a -2.7 wind. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay to an all-time state record time of 41.52 as well as the 4x200 relay to another all-time state record 1:26.91.

 

- Akeem Sirleaf of North St. Paul won the Class AA 200 meters in 21.51 after taking third in the 100 meters.

 

- Honour Finley, a sophomore from Bloomington Kennedy, ran 54.99 to win the Class AA 400 meters. She was also second in the 200

 

- Leron Norton from Eastview ran 48.26 to win the Class AA 400 meters. 

 

- Lucas Trapp from Elk River, a junior, ran 1:50.80 to win the Class AA 800 meters.

 

- Davis Eldridge from Eden Prairie won the Class AA 300 hurdles (38.06) and also helped his team win the 4x400 relay title (3:19.40).

 

- The Lakeville South girls quartet of Haley Lubow, Katlyn Larson, Caraline Slattery and Jenny Mosser broke the all-time state record in the 4x400 relay with 3:50.12 in the Class AA final.

 

- Andrianna Jacobs, a junior from Rochester County, broke the Class AA meet record in the pole vault with 13-1 and took three attempts at 13-4.50 to go after the all-time state best (13-4). 

 

 - Benjamin Ose of Eden Prairie jumped 15-8 to break the Class AA meet record in the pole vault.

 

- Sophomore Allison Gerads of Champlin Park jumped 18-10.75 to win the Class AA long jump title. 

 

- Natalie Manders of Eastview, a junior, threw 153-3 to win the Class AA girls discus.

 

- Cassidy Smestad from Mounds View won the Class AA shot put title with 44-8.75. She launched the winning throw on her third attempt.

 

- Shane Streich of Waseca, after blitzing through the Class A 800-meter prelims in 1:51.04, dominated the final with a winning time of 1:54.59. He also broke the Class A meet record in the 1,600 with 4:12.02 -- taking victory there by more than nine seconds. He also anchored Waseca to the 4x400 relay victory.

 

- Jonathan Webb of Minnehaha Academy swept the Class 1A titles in the 100 (11.26), 200 (21.94) and 400 meters (48.59).  

 

- Jon Tollefson of St. Croix Lutheran retained his Class A hurdles titles with 14.61 (US#27 13.92 wind legal meet record prelim) and 37.96 in the 300 hurdles. 

 

- Noah Carlson from Rushford-Peterson, a sophomore, won Class A titles in the long jump (22-11.25) and the triple jump (48-4).

 

- Jenna Gatz of Belle Plaine, a junior, won the Class A 400 meters in 57.11 and also placed second in the 200 (25.98). 

 

- Freshman Jia Lewis and sophomore sister Jada Lewis, of Edison, went 1-2 in the Class A 100 meters and Jada also won the 200 meters. Both finals were into a headwind. It was Jia's second 100 meters title. The sisters also teamed up on the winning 4x100 relay.

 

Top Teams:

 

The Lakeville South girls, thanks to a huge final effort and state record in the 4x400 relay, captured the Class AA team title with 49.50 points. Meanwhile Wayzata overcame five individual victories by Eden Prairie and won the boys team championship 71.50 to 68.

 

Belle Plaine's girls won the Class A title with 56 points, dethroning runner-up Edison (49). Shane Streich's Waseca team won the boys title with 70 points.

 

Top Competition: Fierce competition in the girls distance races was evident in the Class AA 1,600 meters final where five athletes broke five minutes. Bethany Hasz of Alexandria edged out defending champion Tess Misgen of Shakopee, 4:47.57 to 4:48.54. Both of them were within reach of the state meet record set by Elizabeth Yetzer of Lakeville, 4:46.14, in 2004. The top four finishers in the race are eligible to come back again next year.

 

Record-breaker: The girls 300-meter hurdles final was simply the greatest in state history. The top three finishers all broke the 11-year-old state meet record of 43.09. Meleah Biermaier of Thief River Falls, a junior, ran US#23 42.13 for the win. Erin Huls of Rocori ran 42.63 for second place and Caraline Slattery of Lakeview South ran 42.97 for third. Karina Joiner, who had earlier won the 100 hurdles, finished fourth in 43.22. Not only did Biermaier smash the 1987 all-time state record, Huls later broke the all-time state mark in the 400 hurdles with 1:00.66.
