Timpanogos sweeps 4A team titles;

Wayment, Clinger run fast on 'new' course

Whether or not they are deemed to be the new queen and king of Sugar House Park, it's apparent that Courtney Wayment of Davis and Casey Clinger of American Fork helped nudge the overall evolution of high school cross country in Utah just a little further on Wednesday.

The course still stretches for three miles and ends on a track, but there are some new wrinkles to the layout in the third mile. It may be a few seconds faster. I may be close to the same. But Wayment and Clinger ran faster than anyone has before at the Utah state cross country championships.

In the tug-of-war rivalry that exists between Utah superpowers Davis and American Fork, the state meet offered spoils to both Class 5A schools. Wayment ran 17:24.7 (faster than Sarah Feeny ran 2013) but American Fork won the team title 41 to 51 over runner-up Davis.

In the 5A boys race, Clinger, a junior ran 14:52.8 on the way to victory (and faster than Luke Puskedra ran in 2007). But Davis claimed the team title, stuffing five guys into the top 13.

In 4A, Timpanogos (which rocked the DyeStat Snapchat account) swept the team titles. Up front in the boys race, Alek Parsons of Ogden dipped under 15 minutes and beat nationally ranked Garek Bielaczyc, who finished third. Timpanogos' leader Will Handley was second.

"I feel so awesome," Wayment said. "It's an indescribable feeling. I put my best effort forward and it showed."

Wayment said she has never been as fit as she is now, but she believed the course was a bit harder than she remembered it.

"The last 600 meters (before the track) is a slow steady incline," she said. "It took something out of me. I think that part was harder, but it's hard for me to say. I've never been in shape like this and never had the miles under me like I do now."

Wayment won her first big race of the season at the Bob Firman Invitational in Idaho on Sept. 26.

"That, honestly, really did boost my confidence a lot," Wayment said. "I was surrounded by great competition. Bryn Morley was there, Destiny Collins was there. I had really great competition and that set the tone for (what came after)."

Wayment also had nice things to say about American Fork, which packed five runners between fifth and 11th place with a spread of 14.9 seconds.

"Obviously my teammates and I are a little bit sad," Wayment said. "But American Fork has amazing girls and an amzing program. They worked hard for it and they did deserve it. We have some room for improvement."

Like Wayment, Parsons also won at the Bob Firman Invite. But his best result was the narrow regional win over Bielaczyc that came down to tents of a second.

"I tried to take some confidence from it but I knew he would come back (to state) with a lot to prove," Parsons said.

Parson's time of 14:58.9 would be the fourth-fastest in meet history.

"It's hard to tell, but in my personal opinion, I think (the new course) is a little faster," Parsons said. "Casey is great, but I don't know if he's two seconds better than Puskedra or not."

Kate Hunter of Provo ran 18:15.9 to win the Class 4A individual title for the second straight year, finishing about six seconds behind her time from last year.

In Class 3A, the Pine View girls beat Stansbury on the strength of their tie-breaking sixth runner. Kennedy Powell, a sophomore from Union, ran 18:58.4 for the win. Desert Hills won the boys 3A title and Nick Hill of Pine View won the race in 15:43.

In Class 2A,  Anna Camp of Millard won a close battle with Sadie Sargent of North Summit in 18:48. North Summit, though, won the team title over Millard 55-62.  Jace Richins of North Summit won the boys race in 16:21. Millard won the team title.

In Class 1A, Whittni Orton of Panguitch won by more than two and a half minutes in 18:29. But Parowan edged Panguitch in the team race, 46-48. Panguitch won the boys title, though, with 47 points. Tyler Bird of Monticello won that race in 16:32.2.
