Mitchell takes down state 300 hurdles record

 

State Meet Highlights

 
The West Virginia championships are held within eyesight of the capital building in Charleston, at 18,500-seat Laidley Field. The meet includes three classifications. 



Top Performances

 
- Junior Safiyyah Mitchell from Huntington broke the all-time state record in the 300-meter hurdles with her Class 3A victory in 43.67 seconds.  


Anthony Laurita of Morgantown won the Class 3A 3,200 meters in 9:15.89. He was fourth in the 1,600.

 

- Junior Abby Colbert from Jefferson won the Class 3A titles in the 1,600 meters (5:07.30) and the 3,200 (10:59.05). She was also fourth in the 800.

 

- Anacia Hines from St. Albans won the Class 3A titles in the 100 (12.28) and the 200 (25.35). She also ran 14.52 to win the 100 hurdles.

 

- Will Walker of George Washington won the Class 3A 300 hurdles in 38.40. He was also second in the 400 meters and fifth in the 110 hurdles.

 

- Christian Buckley from Poca broke a pair of Class 2A meet records in the throws. He threw 61-1.50 to win the shot put and 180-0 to win the discus.

 

- Junior Austin Garrett from Ritchie County won the Class 2A pole vault with a meet record 15 feet.

 

- Zack Marcum from Scott won the Class 2A titles in the 200 (22.98) and the 400 (48.86).

 

- Jayden Allender from Ritchie County helped the team lock down the title with his hurdles sweep. He took the 110 hurdles in 15.29 and won the 300 hurdles in 38.60. He was also on the winning shuttle hurdles team. He won the high jump with 6-4.

 

- Kayla Haywood of Bridgeport won the Class 2A 100 (12.43) and 200 (25.65). She was also on the winning 4x200 relay.

 

- Junior Nathan Stout from Gilmer County broke the Class 1A meet record in the shot put with 53-2.50 and also won the discus (156-5).



Top Teams:


Martinsburg won the AAA boys title with 55 points. The girls from Hurricane scored 81 points to retain a share of the title, but finished in a tie with Winfield. The Berkeley Springs girls won Class 2A by a third of a point over Bridgeport (69.33 to 69). Ritchie County ran off with the 2A boys title with 78 points.
