Kruse cruises to record-setting win

Kaeo Kruse of Kamehemeha ran set a new standard at the Hawaii state meet at Seabury Hall on Maui, covering three miles faster than anyone in state history.

 

Kruse, who won for the second straight year and was second as a sophomore, also won by the largest margin in state meet history -- 53 seconds. The history of the state meet, which is co-sponsored by the Honolulu Maraton, goes back to 1965.

 

RESULTS

 

Although the meet has been run on a variety of courses, Kruse's time of 15:22.23 is the fastest ever at the state meet. 

 

Hawaii runs a single-class championship and he Iolani boys won the team championship for the first time since 2005. Iolani put four runners in the top 20. 

 

Amanda Beaman of Iolani won the girls title after finishing second the past two years. Beaman unseated 2014 champion Lisa Tashiro of Kaiser, who challenged early in the race but then finished 19th. 

 

Beaman ran 18:26.74 and was 17 seconds clear of her closest pursuer at the end. 

 

Punahou won the team title for the ninth time in 10 years under legendary coach Duncan McDonald.
