Niles Thomas of Miyamura (photo above by Blake Wood) may only be 5-foot-4, but on Saturday at the New Mexico state cross country championships in Rio Rancho, he stood tallest among the state’s best runners.

Thomas won the Class 5A title for the second year in a row and his winning time of 15:54 was the fastest of the day.

“After my race I was curious about (whether) I had the fastest time in the state so I had to wait for the 6A kids to run,” Thomas said.

Sure enough, 6A winner Andrew Bosquez of Hobbs was happy to lead his team to the championship and he ran a strong time of 15:54.7. But that wasn’t quite as fast as Thomas.

Thomas, who lives in Gallup (altitude 6,470 feet) said that his hometown is a great place to run.

“You’ve got hills, dirt, gravel, high elevation, so it all comes together and makes you a great runner,” Thomas said. “Gallup is a beautiful place to run and live.”

Thomas pulled away late, kicking into high gear in the final 800 to separate from his teammate, Nicholas Jameson, and Albuquerque Academy’s Jordan Lesansee.

ABQ Academy, however, did won the 5A team title 45-48 over Los Alamos. Miyamura was third.

In Class 6A, Hobbs scored 49 points to win a close battle with Rio Rancho (56).

Amanda Mayoral led Cleveland to the Class 6A team title. She ran to a dominant win with 18:12 and won by 44 seconds. Cleveland edged Rio Rancho 52 to 53 to win championship.

Arena Lewis from Belen won the Class 5A girls race in 18:29. Los Alamos runners went 2-3-4 behind her and won the team title with 27 points for the school's seventh straight championship.

In Class 4A, Alex Heffelfinger from East Mountain ran 16:01.4 to take the victory. Zuni packed up nicely with a 50-second spread 1-5 and won the team title with 68 points.

Addison Rauch matched her teammate from East Mountain and won the girls 4A race in 19:11.95. Shiprock won a tight team competition with 58 points, while Taos was second with 60 and Pojoaque was third with 65.

In Class 3A, Julian Garcia led a 1-2-3 sweep for Pecos, which won easily with 19 points. Alizabeth Williams won the girls race and led Academy for Technoloy & the Classics to the team win with 50 points.

In the Class 2A/1A races, Mesa Vista’s boys (52) and Mountainair girls (56) were the team champs. Isaiah Rodarte from Penasco won the boys race by 56 seconds in 16:41.2. Carly Gonzalez of Penasco won the girls race by 37 seconds with 20:47.8.
