Sophomore Brodey Hasty of Brentwood won the Class AAA cross country title a year after finishing in the runner-up spot to Daniel Boone’s Adam Barnard.

Hasty, who has a bright future, ran 15:35.1 and was 15 seconds faster than second-place finisher Josh Routh of Boone. He also led his team to the championship as Brentwood scored 63 points to fend off Oakridge (87 points) and Boone (110).

Senior Megan Murray from Knoxville East won the girls race in 18:49.2. Brentwood senior Hailey Hendry was second in 18:58.50. Houston edged Brentwood for the team title, 86-97.

In Division 1 A/AA meet at Percy Warner Park, there was a big showdown in the girls race. Taylor Cuneo of Central Magnet ran 18:21.3 and beat Rebecca Story (Christian Academy of Knoxville), who ran 18:45.10. That’s a reversal of the order earlier this season when Story broke out with a big win over Cuneo at the Jesse Owens XC Classic in Alabama.

Signal Mountain put four girls in the top 13 overall and won the team championship with 46 points.

Luke Meade of Sullivan East, one of the top talents in the state, won the boys race in 15:39.2 – and a margin of 65 seconds over the runner-up.

Knoxville Catholic ran off with the team title with 55 points – thanks fourth and fifth runners that were far superior to anyone else’s.

In the Division 2-2A meet, Claire Cheeseman of Brentwood Academy led a 1-2-6-7 charge that led to the team title (34 points). Cheeseman ran 18:57.7 and won by 30 seconds. Her brother, Carter Cheeseman, a freshman, also won. He ran 16:20.4 and led a 1-2-3-5-7 domination for Brentwood Academy (18 points).

In the Division 2-A meet, Carter Coughlin of Webb School (Knoxville) won the boys race in 16:34.3 and hit tape 50 seconds ahead of the next runner. His team also scored 19 points for an easy win. Niamh Schumacher of The King’s Academy ran 18:54 to interrupt the Webb School, which went 2-3-4-7 on the way to girls team victory with 33 points.
