Rainy weather dominates Portland forecast

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

If Nike Cross Nationals had been held last Saturday, after an almost entirely dry week on top of a drier than usual fall, Glendoveer Golf Course's pristine fairways would have been in near-ideal condition.

But it's December now, and this is Portland. The weather doesn't stay the same for long.

Beginning Monday night, rain started falling and a series of small storms have lined up off the Pacific Coast to jab at Western Oregon throughout the week. Wednesday morning commuters less than five miles east of Glendoveer woke up to ice on the roads.

Rain is expected every day between now and Saturday and it could be accompanied by high winds as well. There is no threat of snow, and that alone is a welcome respite for teams flying in from Minnesota and Montana and elsewhere.

It is going to be muddy? That's a good question. Up until now, the course has adequately absorbed the rain without a problem. By the end of the week, it will probably be very much the same as it was last year: Mostly fine, mushy in spots, with a few muddy patches.

No matter how much it rains between now and Saturday, it will not be as muddy as it was in the most difficult years at Portland Meadows. And it won't be as muddy as the Texas state meet or NXN South meets. Temperatures should be in the mid-40s at race time.

Fortunately, for spectators, there are plenty of towering fir trees at Glendoveer to stand beneath.
