Tom Heath, the patriach of the Christian Brothers Academy running dynasty for more than four decades, said Monday that he will retire.
According to Jim Lambert of the Newark Star-Ledger, Heath, 68, had been considering retirement throughout the season.
"It was on my mind since the beginning of the school year, and then at the Monmouth County meet this year I had a lot of trouble getting up the hill (the start hill at Holmdel Park), and I knew it was time,'' Heath told Lambert. "I'm cooked.''
Under Heath, CBA accumulated a mind-boggling record. The school has won a national record 343 consecutive dual meets in cross country, dating back to 1974. The Colts under Heath won 21 New Jersey Meet of Champions titles and 27 New Jersey Non-Public A Group championships.
One of Heath's best teams won the 2011 Nike Cross Nationals championship in Portland.
After placing second behind rival Don Bosco Prep in the 2015 Groups meet, CBA rebounded to win the MOC title. The team then placed second at NXN Northeast to earn an automatic berth to NXN and finished up 20th.
Senior Blaise Ferro told DyeStat in a direct message: "I can speak for all of our team and alumni that he changed all of our lives ... in and out of running."
