'Tinman' the running guru behind Hunter

Tom Schwartz may live more than 2,000 miles away from Purcellville, Va., but the running coach has had a profound influence on the development of Drew Hunter.

And after Hunter won the Foot Locker Cross Country title on Saturday, Schwartz's role as a personal coach was celebrated.

Schwartz, who lives in Boise, Idaho, has developed a system for training distance runners that the Hunters have tapped into for years. And as Drew became more and more advanced, Joan and Marc Hunter, gladly handed their son's training to Schwartz, known to followers of the Letsrun message boards as "Tinman."

The family's association with Schwartz began about a decade ago when he coached Joan to success as a Masters competitor. Then, as Joan and Marc began to coach a youth team in Virginia, they adopted Schwartz's philosophies as a guiding resource for developing kids. Schwartz coaches and consults hundreds of athletes through his business, Tinman Endurace Coaching.

"I had started using Tom's methods, which are somewhat unusual," Joan Hunter said. "They are very stamina-focused with limited anaerobic work even for middle distance runners. I found as a Masters (competitor) that we get fragile as we get older and injuries crop up very easily."

Hunter applied Schwart'z stamina-building techniques to the kids she was coaching.

Schwartz has written extensively about his training, which calls for "keeping the ball rolling" by staying consistent and running workouts at what he terms "critical velocity." There are tempo runs involved at the slower end of things, but there is very little in the way of traditional speed work. When speed is called for it usually comes at the end of the workout.

Schwartz guided Drew through periods of his junior year when he was preparing for Foot Locker, preparing for New Balance Nationals Indoor, and the postseason meets last spring.

After his end of season rest period last spring, Schwartz mapped out a senior year plan for Drew and began writing every single workout.

Instead of communicating through Joan, Schwartz and Drew have communicated more closely. Meanwhile, Marc and Joan, have focused on the Loudoun Valley High School teams that they coach, while allowing Schwartz to provide the extra layer of coaching attention their son requires. (The Loudoun Valley boys won the Virginia Class 4A title this fall).

For a tune-up workout last week, 3x Mile, Schwartz communicated through Facetime and gave instructions on each recovery and the next split.

"He's been the one that's been doing the X's and O's this year," Drew said of Schwartz. "He's the reason I'm running fast. He's a genius and a great coach. He will keep coaching me indoors and outdoors and we expect some big things."

After a well-deserved break, Drew has January 30 circled on his calendar -- an indoor mile at the Camel City Elite races. That's the day he may go after Alan Webb's indoor high school record.
