Hoosier State Relays Preview

Indiana's top track and field athletes will compete for indoor supremacy at the Hoosier State Relays on Saturday, March 26th.  The meet will be divided into small school and big school championships for boys and girls.  The overall field is pretty balanced, but there are favorites in some events.

Small School Girls:

• West Lafayette senior Kristen Johnson is the early favorite to take the 3200 title.  Johnson, who is seeded first at 10:49.71, placed tenth in the Emerging Elite race at New Balance Indoor Nationals a few weeks ago.  Greencastle freshman Emma Wilson could challenge.

- Look for Bowman Academy and Bishop Chatard to duke it out in the sprint relays, as they are seeded 1-2 in the 4 x 200 and 2-1 in the 4 x 400.  Guerin Catholic, Brebeuf Jesuit, and Bellmont could challenge Chatard in the 4 x 800 and DMR, with Bellmont having the highest seed in the latter.

Small School Boys:

- Hamilton Heights senior Michael DeFoe is seeded first in the 60 hurdles in 8.28.  DeFoe placed third in the 110 hurdles at the outdoor state championships last year.

- Winamac junior Bill Williamson has an edge on the competition in the pole vault.  Williamson is seeded at 15-6, two and a half feet above the next competitor.

Big School Girls

•Can anyone stop Pike junior Lynna Irby? She has been one of the best sprinters in the nation since her freshman year and is seeded first in the 60m dash at 7.40 seconds.  Irby placed sixth in  the championship race at New Balance Nationals Indoor.

- Irby's teammate, senior Sandra Brown, is also among the nation's best, placing eighth at New Balance Nationals Indoor in the pole vault.  Brown qualified with a height of 12-0, but she jumped 12-4 at nationals.

- Crown Point senior Kristen LaCosse is seeded first in the 60-meter hurdles.  LaCosse won the event at the Ted Haydon Holiday Classic and the Dorothy Dawson Invitational, both in Illinois, and has run a best time of 8.86 this season.

Big School Boys

- Homestead senior Brayden Law burst onto the national scene at New Balance Nationals Indoor, running the 2 mile in 9:04.3 for ninth place. With Carmel star Ben Veatch not running, Law is the big favorite to win the 3,200.

- Carmel junior Ryan Lipe, third at outdoor state in the pol vault last year, is seeded first at 16-6.

- Ben Davis senior Christian Powell, the outdoor state long jump champion last year, is seeded first at 24-6.75, nearly two feet ahead of the second seed.
