Born, Logue dominate; STA sweeps 5A titles

Junior Molly Born ran a very fast time of 17:32.7 and won the Class 6A girls race at RimRock Farm by 37 seconds in 6A, but Lawrence Free State beat Born's Shawnee Mission Northwest 59-87 for the team title.

The Class 6A, 5A and 3A championships were held at RimRock Farm. The 4A, 2A and 1A meet was in Wamego.

In Class 5A, St. Thomas Aquinas went 1-2-8-9 on the way to a dominant team win with 38 points. William Cole and Alexander Gill led the way with 15:49.8 and 15:52.6. They were 14 seconds clear of third place. STA's team average was the fastest of all classes.

Matching the boys, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls also won the team title and went 1-2 at the front of the race. Olivia Sovereign (19:28.7) and Margaret Pigott (19:39.1), the 2015 winner, led the team to victory with 40 points to Lenexa-St. James Academy's 54. 

Will Tindall led Olathe East to the 6A boys team title with his victory in 16:26.2. Olathe East put all of its scoring five in the top 23. 

In Class 3A, Hugoton swept the team titles. The boys scored 52 points and the girls scored 74. Robert Pearce from Kingman ran 16:40.2 for the individual boys win. Celia Biel of Hutchinson-Trinity won the girls race in 19:17.4. 

 

At Wamego, Cailie Logue of Girard, an Iowa State commit, won her fourth Class 4A title by running 18:15.4. She was 40 seconds ahead of runner-up Aimee Davis, a freshman from Clearwater. Maize South put six in the top 15 to dominate the team competition with 31 points. 

Lakelin Conrad from Wichita Collegiate won the 4A boys race in 16:14.7. Maize South won the boys title with 67 points.

Rebecca Avelar of Stanton County ran 20:24.8 to win the Class 2A race. Bennington put three in the top 10 and scored 82 points to edge out Kiowa County (89) and Wabaunsee (92). 

Frank Cuevas of Kiowa County won a tight finish in the 2A boys race, nosing ahead of Hadley Splechter of Yates Center, 16:41.2 to 16:41.4. St. John scraped by Stanton County 73-74 for the team win.

Autumn Princ of Sylvan-Lucas, a freshman, won the Class 1A girls title by a full minute in 19:44.1. Goessel edged Ingalls and Greeley County 60 to 65 and 69 (scoring four) for the team title.

Kyler True of Olpe, last year's 2A champion, won the 1A boys title in 16:18.7 -- about 10 seconds faster than he ran in 2015. Beloit-St. John's won the team title with 51 points.
