Jordan Geist Excited for Possibilities in 2017 - DyeStat

Geist has Carter's record in 'back of my mind'

Jordan Geist is interested in bringing more attention to the shot put and he sees good reasons why the event should be a top draw at high school competitions in 2017.

On the heels of smashing the national indoor high school record with the 16-pound implement, the senior from Knoch HS in Western Pennsylvania said that Michael Carter’s 1979 outdoor high school record is in play.

Not only that, Geist indicated that it could be a race to the record.

“I’ve read where (Carter’s record) was voted the most unbreakable record in the world,” Geist said. “If I can get that it would be incredible. It’s sitting in the back of my mind after this past week.”

Geist opened his series at the Hempfield Spartans meet Dec. 22 in Greensburg, Pa., with 63s and a 64 that initially broke Ryan Crouser’s 2011 record of 63-11.

In the sixth round, Geist put all of his energy into a big throw and made a tight-rope save to avoid a foul. The shot landed at 68 feet, 4 inches – a distance that would have been good for fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in July.

The mark elevated Geist to the No. 3 performer on the all-time world U-20 list, including second among Americans behind Terry Albritton’s 69-0.75 from 1974.

“It definitely surprised me,” Geist said. “With 64, I knew I was starting off pretty well. There’s still a couple things that we could do technically to get better.”

At the same meet, he broke the Pennsylvania all-time best in the weight throw with 76-6.

Geist said he has gained 20 pounds of body weight and is lifting “significantly” more in workouts than he was 12 months ago. He continues to train in a vacant warehouse where he is coached by his mother, a former All-American thrower at Slippery Rock University.

Geist said he prefers the 16-pound shot, which he will throw when he gets to the University of Arizona, and plans to compete with it a couple of more times this winter.

“Part of it is getting ready for college, but I’m also better at throwing heavier implements,” he said. “I have always thrown them because it helps with the training. I love throwing the 16 because it makes me slow down and hit better positions.”

Part of what makes the upcoming outdoor season so exciting for Geist is the knowledge that Texan Adrian Piperi and Californian Bronson Osborn are out there working just as hard. All three athletes topped 71 feet with the 12-pound high school shot at New Balance Nationals Outdoor last June in North Carolina.

Piperi won that national title after Geist had won the indoor championship. Osborn later took the bronze medal at the World U-20 Championships, beating Piperi.

“It’s amazing to have the possibility of not just one guy, but three, over 75 feet (in the shot put),” Geist said. “Hopefully we can draw more crowds and make it a spectator sport.”
