Wheating Leaves Oregon Track Club Elite, Nijel Amos is New AdditionPublished by
Andrew Wheating Leaves Oregon Track Elite, 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Nijel Amos Joins TeamBy Adam Kopet, DyeStat Editor After seven years competing for the Oregon Track Club Elite, Andrew Wheating, now 29 years old, is leaving the team. This year, he is training and competing as an individual. According to Chris Hansen of the Register Guard, the two-time Olympian and former Oregon Duck will continue to train in Eugene and be advised by OTC Elite coach Mark Rowland. Wednesday night the OTC Elite tweeted their 2017 team roster. As expected, Wheating is missing, as are several other former Ducks, including Alexi Pappas, Jordan McNamara and Mac Fleet. However, the notable addition to this year's team is Nijel Amos, the 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist for Botswana over 800m. Amos, only 22 years old, has suffered from injury riddled seasons in two of the last four years. After winning the silver medal at the age of 18, Amos disappeared for most of 2013. He returned to form in 2014, winning the Diamond League 800m title and beating David Rudisha in the Commonwealth Games. He was also a Diamond League winner in 2015. Amos' personal best in the 800m is 1:41.73, set five years ago in the London Olympic final. He will have Harun Abda, Elijah Greer, Charles Jock and Andrew Osagie as 800m training partners. More news |
