The 39th Simplot Games are scheduled for Thursday-Saturday at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.

Here are 10 storylines to follow at one of the most prestigious indoor high school meets in the country:

Tara tries to tackle triple

After setting national high school and American Junior indoor records Friday in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches at the Dunamis Sports Group Prep Classic, along with winning the triple jump and 60-meter hurdles in Frisco, Texas, Agoura CA senior Tara Davis makes her final appearance at the Simplot Games looking to complete some unfinished business.

Davis is a two-time Simplot Games champion in the long jump, in addition to winning the 60 hurdles last year. But the Georgia signee is still looking for her first triple jump victory after former Mountlake Terrace WA standout Chinne Okoronkwo, now a freshman at Wisconsin, won the event the past two years.

Davis set the meet record in the long jump last year of 20-10.75, but has her sights set on a sweep of all three events, along with challenging the 60 hurdles record of 8.16 set in 2008, as well as the triple jump standard of 43-5 from 2005.

Davis prevailed against Mansfield Lake Ridge TX star Jasmine Moore in both the long jump and triple jump in Texas. Moore still boasts the national lead of 42-3.25, with Davis second at 41-9.

Davis will also square off with El Cerrito senior Kaylah Robinson in the 60 hurdles in another rematch of last year’s California state outdoor 100 hurdles championship. Davis edged Robinson by an 8.31 to 8.50 margin Jan. 14 at the UW Indoor Preview.

Clinger seeks record run

Following a thrilling battle with Salt Lake City East UT standout Garek Bielaczyc in the 3,200 last year, American Fork UT senior Casey Clinger will look to make his final prep indoor race a memorable one, but might have to do so in a solo effort.

Bielaczyc edged Clinger 8:57.03 to 8:59.02, posting the two fastest times in meet history. Clinger ran 9:16.68 on Jan. 21 at the Weber State Invitational to win by nearly 10 seconds over teammate Patrick Parker.

Hunter Moore of Olentangy Orange OH produced the national lead Sunday at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase by running 9:03.05. That mark is well within reach for the BYU-bound Clinger, but going after the record will require an impressive performance for the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, who should receive a challenge from Ogden UT seniors Travis Feeny and Garrett Barton, along with Lehi UT junior Ryan Raff.

All-American matchup

The girls 1,600 includes three Nike Cross Nationals All-Americans, along with a pair of Foot Locker National finalists, in a battle that could challenge the meet record of 4:46.97 set in 2014 by Ogden UT standout Sarah Feeny.

Brie Oakley of Grandview CO, the NXN champion, will compete in her first indoor 1,600 of the season after opening Feb. 4 by running 10:41.42 in the 3,200 at the Air Force High School Open.

Bingham UT senior Whitney Rich, 11th at NXN, won the 1,600 and 3,200 titles Jan. 28 at the Utah High School Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships in 4:56.18 and 10:39.63.

Mountain View ID freshman Lexy Halladay, 16th at NXN, prevailed in last year’s 1,600 in 4:53.40, with American Fork UT senior Sarah Musselman taking second in 4:58.45. Halladay won the mile Feb. 4 at the New Balance Boise Indoor in 5:00.89.

Musselman, the only American Fork athlete to compete at both NXN and Foot Locker Nationals, returns in addition to 2015 Foot Locker National finalist McKenna Lee of Weber UT. Blackfoot ID standout Michelle Pratt, along with Davis UT stars Ally Geisler, Alicia Halverson, Jenna Connell, Miah Weaver and Abi Waddoups are also scheduled to compete.

International stars take center stage for last time

Past Simplot Games champion Celeste Mucci of Maribyrnong Sports Academy in Melbourne, Australia, is scheduled to compete at Holt Arena for the final time, along with Vincent Massey Collegiate and Stride Ahead Tough Track star Victoria Tachinski of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Both individuals competed in the IAAF World U20 Championships in July in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Tachinski finished sixth in the women’s 800 in 2:06.11 and Mucci placed 17th in the women’s heptathlon with 5,254 points. Tachinski also contributed to a bronze medal for Canada in the 4x400 relay in the country’s junior record 3:32.25.

Mucci, 17, established the World U-20 lead in the outdoor heptathlon with 5,628 points Feb. 5 at the Victorian Multi-Event Championships in Melbourne, becoming the youngest Australian to surpass the 5,600-point barrier.

Tachinski, 17, is a two-time 400-meter champion at the meet and Mucci won the high jump last year.

Minor is a major talent

After California sprinters dominated the 60-meter dash and 200 at last year’s meet, including a sweep of both titles by former Rio Mesa star and USC freshman Zaria Francis, Denver East CO sophomore Arria Minor is looking to win both events this season.

Minor has the fastest 200 time in the country at 23.85 seconds and ranks third in the 60 at 7.41, both performances Jan. 15 at the Martin Luther King Mile High Classic.

A big showdown involving Jasmin Reed of Serra CA and Minor could materialize in both finals. Maya Evans of Vista Peak CO could challenge in the 60, with Tierra Robinson-Jones of Bishop O’Dowd CA likely in contention in the 200 final.

Ping looks to make her mark

After Lexy Halladay won the girls 1,600 as an eighth-grader last season, Park City UT talent Grace Ping will attempt to achieve the same feat in the 3,200 this year.

Ping, who placed sixth at NXN, clocked 9:43.31 in the 3,000 racing against professionals Jan. 15 at the UW Indoor Preview.

A finals showdown could develop involving Ping and Glacier MT junior Annie Hill, who returns to the Simplot Games after placing third in the 1,600 in 2015. Davis UT senior Aubrey Argyle should also challenge for the victory.

Sprint showcase for Woodhall

Syracuse UT senior Hunter Woodhall, who took silver in the 200 and bronze in the 400 in the T43 classification at the Paralympic Games in Rio, will make his Simplot Games debut.

Woodhall captured 200 and 400 titles Jan. 28 at the Utah High School Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships, then competed against college and professional runners Feb. 4 at the Golden Sprint Challenge.

Woodhall, who is looking to dip under 48 seconds in the 400, could receive a challenge from talented freshman Erick Steward of Cathedral CA, competing for New Image Training Group.

Ipsen seeks individual trifecta

Following a sweep of the high jump, long jump and triple jump Feb. 3-4 at the New Balance Boise Indoor, Capital ID senior Britt Ipsen will look to achieve similar success at Simplot Games.

Ipsen, representing YMCA Team Idaho, finished third at last year’s meet in the long jump and triple jump. He is scheduled to compete in all three jumps and the 60-meter hurdles this season.

Ipsen is the only athlete in the country this season to have met the criteria of clearing 6-9 in the high jump, in addition to leaping 23-4.25 in the long jump and 45-9.75 in the triple jump.

Unbelievable collection of Utah talent

After nine individuals clocked 4:20 or better in the boys 1,600 at the Utah High School Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships, many of those athletes will square off in a rematch at Holt Arena.

American Fork stars McKay Johns and Patrick Parker, Springville standouts Haden Penrod and Grant Gardner, Weber senior Talon Hull and Timpanogos senior Joe Benson headline a field that also includes Borah ID junior Siyad Matan, who placed seventh in last year’s 1,600.

Battle for relay royalty

Although the California-based Academy of Speed Track Club isn’t returning to this year’s event after winning the girls 4x200 and 1,600 sprint medley relays last year, there is still plenty of depth in four relay events for both genders.

Davis UT, YMCA Team Idaho and Fort Collins Track Club from Colorado will headline the relays, along with California heavyweights New Image Training Group, Tri-Valley Flyers and C.A. Track Club.

Davis, scheduled to bring more than 100 athletes to the three-day meet, has the potential to sweep both 4x800 relays and also challenge for 4x400 victories.
