There were some great battles and individual moments at the Tyson Invitational this past weekend. Florida freshman Grant Holloway edged Iowa’s Aaron Mallett, 7.58 to 7.64, to retake the national lead over the 60-meter hurdles. South Dakota freshman Chris Nilsen won the pole vault with the highest clearance in the nation this season, with his vault of 18-8.25 (5.70m), while SIU-Edwardsville’s Julian Harvey took the national lead and beat former list-leader Holloway in the long jump, 26-5.5 to 25-8.75.
Rounding out the Tyson Invitational performances, Arkansas’ Clive Pullen won the triple jump with a collegiate leading mark of 56-4.75 in the triple jump, with USC senior Just’N Thymes beating LSU’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, 20.47 to 20.49 in the 200 as they moved to 2-3 on the national list.
Texas A&M’s Fred Kerley won the 400 meters in a nation-leading 45.02, which ranks fourth all-time on the collegiate list, and aided the Aggies' 4x400 relay team to the second-fastest time in the country this season with their 3:03.50 performance at the Clemson Tiger Paw meet.
Elsewhere, Oregon’s Edward Cheserek outkicked Washington’s Colby Gilbert 13:32.59 to 13:34.85 in the 5,000 at the Husky Classic, as the two moved to first and second nationally. Joseph White of Georgetown debuted over 800 meters and won at the Iowa State Classic in 1:46.44.
UTEP edged Virginia Tech in the distance medley relay at the Music City Challenge, 9:31.13 to 9:31.15, moving to second and third on the college performance list. Southern Illinois junior Jared Kern took the national lead in the shot put with a toss of 67-2 (20.47m).
