Kerley helps Aggies lower one record, approaches another

Texas A&M senior becomes only fifth runner to eclipse 45-second barrier indoors, contributes to No. 3 all-time 4x400 relay at SEC Championships

Texas A&M senior Fred Kerley became only the fourth American and fifth male runner in the world to eclipse the 45-second barrier in the 400 meters on any indoor surface – banked 200 meters or oversized 300-meter track – with his 44.94 in Friday’s prelims at the SEC Indoor Championships in Nashville, Tenn.

Fred Kerley went on to win the title Saturday in 45.21, in addition to teaming with Richard Rose, Devin Dixon and Mylik Kerley to help the Aggies lower their own collegiate record in the 4x400 relay to 3:02.39, the best time ever produced on an oversized track.

Fred Kerley, who boasts the fastest 400 time on an oversized track, joins Americans Kerron Clement (44.57), Michael Johnson (44.63) and LaShawn Merritt (44.93) by dipping under 45 seconds. Grenada’s Kirani James ran 44.80 in 2011 while at Alabama, making Kerley the No. 4 all-time collegiate performer.

Texas A&M ran the third-fastest indoor 4x400, trailing only a pair of U.S. national teams. Florida (3:02.73) and Alabama (3:02.92) became the second and third programs in collegiate history to run under 3:03 indoors.

Wallace Spearmon, Darold Williamson, Jeremy Wariner and Clement ran 3:01.96 in 2006 in Fayetteville, Ark., for the American record, although it wasn’t acknowledged by IAAF as the world record since there was no post-race drug testing.

Kyle Clemons, David Verburg, Kind Butler III and Calvin Smith Jr. clocked 3:02.13 in 2014 at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, for the recognized world record.
