Cooper Teare Wins 5,000 at Texas Distance FestivalPublished by
Teare beats top field in Texas 5K with 14:13.26 By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor One week after winning the mile at New Balance Nationals Indoor, Cooper Teare beat an elite field in the 5,000 meters at the Texas Distance Festival on Saturday, running 14:13.26. RESULTS Teare, of St. Joseph Notre Dame CA, was among a group of top high school runners who stayed overnight at the home of Reed Brown and then ran on his home track at Southlake Carroll High School. Teare ran the No. 4 time in California history and the best since 2011. Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons NC was second in 14:17.89, Noah Affolder of Carlisle PA ran 14:18.26 for third and Seth Hirsch of Millard West NE was fourth in 14:25.03. Sophomore Alex Maier of Flower Mound TX was fifth in 14:25.60. Daniel Viegra of Pflugerville Hendrickson ran 14:29.27 for sixth, Daniel Bernal of El Paso Eastwood was seventh in 14:29.44, Luis Grijalva of Armijo CA was eighth in 14:35.78 and Brown was ninth in 14:37.51. Maier's time was significant. He became the second-fastest sophomore of all-time behind Edward Cheserek (14:02.33) and also took down the 41-year-old Texas high school record (14:29.2 by Marty Froelick, Houston Scarborough, 1976).
