Gatlin v. De Grasse 100-meter clash highlights latest entries

By Scott Bush, DyeStat Editor

Sport thrives at the highest level when athletes go head to head more than once or twice a year. It's definitely worth the price of admission at major championship events, when athletes must square off against their toughest challengers, but it's worth just as much when they match up in other major contests.

The Doha Diamond League meeting, the first of the IAAF Diamond League season, is already shaping some incredible fields to jump start the 2017 outdoor track and field season. Having announced numerous world champions and Olympic gold medalists already, the event unveiled a few more fields this week.

Leading the charge is the men's 100 meters, which will see Olympic silver medalist Justin Gatlin go up against Rio bronze medalist Andre De Grasse and the always formidable Asafa Powell. Father time doesn't seem to be slowing down Gatlin, while De Grasse showed the world last summer he might just be the fresh, young superstar the sport will need once Usain Bolt steps aside at season's end.

Another event filled with intrigue is the men's triple jump, which will see the gold-silver-bronze quartet from Rio clash. Team USA's duo of Christian Taylor and Will Claye, former teammates at the University of Florida, go up against Bin Dong of China. Taylor and Claye have continually proven themselves as the top two triple jumpers in the world for some time, but Dong is the reigning world indoor champion and continues to improve.

The Doha Diamond League takes place May 5.
